Since the tour described here seems to have met with a lot of interest I thought that we might organize a tour in English for a larger group in the near future. Please answer here if you are interested and state which date accommodates your summer plans. I will contact the brewery and make the arrangements. (directions by car and Bahn)(Nothing to keep us from doing two tours, of course)
Cheers, sarabyrd
EDIT: This should be a mandatory event for anyone intending to attend the Oktoberfest. You want to know what the stuff is that makes you feel so good/funny/miserable (mostly in that order).
2nd EDIT: Now planned for 9th September 2006 (Saturday)
autoholic
Thanks sarabyrd. I'd be interested in joining an English-language tour of Aying brewery. Right now, I don't have any plans for your indicated time frames. If something does come up before you set a date, I'll PM you.
Regards, autoholic
Hippo
If it were early September, I'd be likely to come along, sounds fun. Early August I probably wouldn't be able to make.
Allershausen
I'd be interested in early September.
Jeeves
Probably. Depends very much on the date.
My company had a day out here but I couldn't go because I was on holiday, so I guess it's my duty to check it out.
thelbc
i would be interested in going in september
koorosh
later than septermber 25th would be wonderful for me

thanks
mere
i'm interested, but as usual cannot confirm until a date is set and closer to the time.
Lupo
I am interested, however, I´m swamped with exams right now and then I´m off on holiday ! smile.gif
UVAexpat
I would be interested in going if toward the middle of September. Thanks!
tsaishiou
I'm interested- but I can only go in early-to-mid August.
thanks sarabyrd!
sarabyrd
The way things look this will be a September event. I will organize it by mid-August (when I go on vacation) for the second Saturday in September (after I am back). So please sign up here by - say August 11, a week before I am due to leave, and I will contact the brewery.
Thank you for joining the event, more info to follow.
P.S. Sorry, tsaishiou, the majority voted for September ... I'll pick up any recycling info that I can.
sarabyrd
A reminder for anyone who might still be interested: This is planned for 9 September, the Saturday before the Oktoberfest starts. Know your beer, taste the unfiltered booze, see the Bavarian Dalek!
Don't be shy, sign up here or PM me and bring your cameras! The surroundings are beautiful and we can drop by the Bräustüberl for lunch/supper/more beer.
Wear your Dirndl and/or Lederhosen! Fool the tour guide!
There is room for many more besides those who have already posted here.
Allershausen
Sorry, having said I'm interested I can't make it that weekend 'cos my daughters visiting. Hope you manage to get the numbers you need.
Carm
darn that is a hash saturday. sorry.
sarabyrd
@ Carm: Change the hash-day to the prior Sunday and do M-Läuft. Bring the Hashers to Aying.
Carm
no can do, we hash every second saturday, and have for 14 years, cannot mess with the Hash Saturday.

Ok, let's make a first list:

I will set this up by Friday (18 August) and be OUT OF THE COUNTRY for 2 weeks (back on 4 Setpember). Bang the drum and pass the word. Did I mention the delightful rye bread that they bake with the brewing residue? You can't buy it, you only get it on the tour.
Linedimi
On 9th of September is great!
I will go with my husband!
How much is it and how many people is the limit?

Kisses biggrin.gif
sarabyrd
Oh, of course - the financials. Up to 14 persons the tour costs 75€, from 15 on it's 5€ per person. I say we go for a limit of 30 people, that's the top limit per guide.
GreenTea
I would be interested in principle, but it's too early to commit myself. Do you need a definite "yea or nay" at this stage?
sarabyrd
@ GreenTea: Naah. The tour will take place, just turn up at the meeting point in time (TBA). Either you're there or you aren't.
autoholic
My calendar has been marked. Thanks, sarabird.
sarabyrd
I have just received confirmation from the brewery for 9 September 2006, 1pm, tour of the brewery in English and beer tasting session. I told them 15 people but it can be more or less, depending on who drops out and who joins.
There is an excellent S-Bahn (S6) leaving Munich Central Station at 12.08pm and arriving in Aying 12.48pm. Remember that His Ratzingerness will be in town (in Riem) that day and there will be brazilians of shiny-eyed out-of-town pilgrims flocking on to public transport to see him. The S6, however, does not run to Riem, we should be fairly safe. I suggest meeting at 11.45am under the big tv screen at the foot of the stairs in the ticket hall at Hauptbahnhof. PM me for my cell phone number in case you don't think you'll find us.
The brewery is right around the corner from the train station, we can't miss it. The Bräustüberl and the Sixthof, an authentic Bavarian farmhouse, are about 10 minutes from there. The Sixthof is only open on Sunday afternoon but I can arrange a special opening for our group if enough people are intereted.
The return journey is just as easy, the S6 leaves for Munich at 11 and 31 minutes past the hour.
I won't be collecting the dues until the day itself, so don't go handing me money now, I'd only spend it (besides, depending on how many go it might be cheaper on the day itself than now).
Linedimi
Hi Sara!

One friend will go also.
You can count me, my husband and one friend. laugh.gif
Lupo
Ok Ill be back in Munich then for sure. Go ahead and sign me up provisionally if you can...I will be there unless I have weekend duty!
toemag
I don't like or drink Ayinger beer, it is probably the worst beer that I ever got drunk on, give us a shout if you have a tour of the Tegernseer Brauhaus.

Tony
Allershausen
Why don't you organise one?
madgibson
@sarabyrd
Just for info - I think you'll find that the Pope is actually in Marienplatz doing prayers on 9th Sept. (around midday). He's out at Riem (Messegelände on the Sun. 10th). All the S-Bahns run through Marienplatz so it could be a tad busy. The trains will be running through - you cannot get on or off the s-bahn/u-bahn at marienplatz (all exits will be "gesperrt").
Linedimi
Hi Sara,

Now it is me and more 4, ok?
Aline, Dimitri, Marcia, Sandra and Vincenzo.

UVAexpat
tsaishiou (if she's still here)
Grinner +1 (wine queen, of all things!)
Linedimi +4
pteren +1
Valentina +1 (probable)
That's 17 at least, feel free to sign up or just show up at the proposed meeting place on the day itself. Any takers for the Sixthof? I need responses to that asap so that I can arrange the tour.
Cheers all!
Pteren
Hi Sara,

My girlfriend and I are definates for the tour on the 9th.

Cheers
Pteren
Hippo
Ah, actually I'm going to have to drop out so I can say bye to Ben. Have fun!
Valentina
Hi, we (my boyfriend and I) are coming! Is it a problem if we meet you directly at the brewery? We were thinking to bike there, if the weather is nice, and anyway I live close to Ostbanhof, and in the Pope-weekend, coming to Hauptbanhof can be problematic.
And of course, if somebody wants to join us biking, just let me know!
sarabyrd
Great idea, Valentina, thank you!
The bike route is very nice, fairly flat and shady on a separate bike path. I only know it from S-Bahn Ottobrunn on; do you have a link to a decent map?
Valentina
Everything I know in the web is google map or michelin. And I have a normal, old fashion paper map, so I promise we won't get lost.
Valentina
As you can see I have problem with the second link: it is www.viamichelin.de, and in "Optionen, etappe..." one can also choose a route to do with the bike (Eine Route in der Stadt? Denken Sie auch daran... Per Fahrrad).
Linedimi
One friend is not coming any more. We will meet the group there. How long do you thing that the visit takes?
sarabyrd
The tour itself is about an hour and a half (including a seriously cool 3-D movie), the beer tasting afterwards can be drawn out for a looooooooooooooooooooooooong time (and there were only 6 of the original 8 drinking). Reckon 3 hours for the whole thing plus getting there and back.
staceyd
Not sure if you're counting numbers but I was planning on tagging along if OK. As an Oktoberfest virgin I think I should brush up on my beer knowledge beforehand!
sarabyrd
Third list:

Grinner +1 (wine queen, of all things!)

Still loads of room for anyone interested. And I do think it would be seriously cool to turn up in Trachten and get a group picture.
Anyone planning to meet us there, the entrance is at the high tower, part wood and part glass, between the train station and the green fields. Plenty of parking available for cars, bikes and butts (benches).
mere
i'm no longer conditional as usual! smile.gif i'll be there!!!

so make it mere+1 please smile.gif
DDBug
damn - there goes my babysitter sad.gif

Just kidding. Sort of. Can we take kids on this tour???
sarabyrd
You can, parts of it will be really boring, parts will be lots of fun (filling plant, light show in the granary, 3-D movie). I think from 8 up it could be enjoyable.
Grinner
eah, Bring the little Bugger with you...
petemoss14
Aying, great! blink.gif One of my three favorite Munich-area breweries (along with Andechs and Weihenstephan). My wife and I will fill 2 more spots. We'll be on that train, but will be picking it up in Starnberg. Thanks for organizing sarabyrd!
sarabyrd
Fourth list:
sarabyrd+Scogs
autoholic

Green Tea
mere (unconditional) (possible +1)
Lupo (the spy)
UVAexpat
tsaishiou (if she's still here)
Grinner +1 (wine queen, of all things!)
Linedimi +3
pteren +1
Valentina +1 (by bike)
staceyd
petemoss +1
DDBug + 2 x 1/2 (?)
This looks like it's gonna be fun ...
sarabyrd
Sadly, I have been informed that the Wine-Queen goes home on weekends. What a shame! We must do our best to quash comfort Grinner.
GreenTea
I definitely intend to be there, but I'll join you on the train at Ostbahnhof if that's OK. Is it definite that you'll be taking the 12:08 from Hauptbahnhof? Front or rear coach?

I shall also be looking for an opportunity to put my Marmite plan into action.

QUOTE (sarabyrd @ Sep 6 2006, 11:47 am) *
I do think it would be seriously cool to turn up in Trachten and get a group picture.

Good idea! - only I don't have a Dirndl. I do have a sort of Trachten-look costume, but it's sadly grown too small for me over the years. Think I might have to turn up in civvies after all. sad.gif
sarabyrd
Go to Wiesn Tracht & Mehr in Tal.
I really don't know where on the train we might be, I'm sure everyone not getting in at Marienplatz or Karlsplatz will be crowding in at Hauptbahnhof. But I suggest that whoever gets to the S-Bahnhof in Aying first sends me an SMS so we can arrange a meeting point there. PM me for my moby number.
