Things to do to potatoes

Transform my spuds

the Boy From Bozlem
Ok so as I now have a kitchen with an oven again I have just decided to cook myself some din dins before I go out on the beer and get slaughtered for the rest of the day.

I was going to make some creation of mine which involves minced beef, onions and mushrooms along with yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes and gravy tongue.gif.

The problem I have is that I now realise that I have no tin to roast my potatoes sad.gif

I don’t really like plain old boiled spuds so I was wondering if anyone has any weird and wonderful ways to prepare this humble vegetable before I resort to plain old mashed.

PS: hurry up cause I’m starving and I need to go out and get drunk wink.gif

Peel them, boil them in as little water as possible for about a third to half the time you normal do. Cut them into quarter inch cubes and fry them in the pan, untll done. Gives you a sort of poor mans hash browns.
the Boy From Bozlem
can i cut into cubes before boiling?
DDBug
why not? they'll cook faster
Yeti
They tend to fall apart real fast though, they should be still firm when you stop boiling them. This method doesn't really work with floury potatoes.
Jenny L
You could also cut them into thin slices and fry them with some onions or whatnot to make Bratkartoffeln. If you have some bacon bits you can throw them in as well. Not sure if that really goes with the rest of your meal, but it tastes good.
Malt-Teaser
No tin, do you not even have an oven dish?

I ask because my favourites are Orange Roast potatoes.

Roast as normal, but instead of any oil or fat, squeeze 2 or 3 oranges over the potatoes.

Excellent.

Hmm anyone have a good Au Gratin recipe? That would be nice.
Or scalloped. Not thought much about doing anything exciting to potatoes but that makes a nice side dish for a bbq.

Potato Recipes
This site looks pretty good for recipes.

I really like the look of the garlic fried potatoes...mmmm.
Sin
My recipe:

1. Take spuds in hand.
2. Open bin.
3. Throw spuds in bin.
4. Head to biergarten and order a maß and halbe hendl.

You know it makes sense. wink.gif

BG- I have my mom's recipe for Au Gratin, but you need those great hashbrowns from home (Canadian kind) and then cream of something soup (would have to find recipe its either Campbells C of Mushroom or C of Celery). And of course some good canadian cheddar! dry.gif

Just use 3 layers of tin foil instead of a tin and roast away as the actress said ...

Looks absolutely delightful, Boy. Next time, put a twig of rosemary in with the pmhb, possibly a crushed clove of garlic.

This is a spud-related question: we made a shedload of coleslaw last night and fancy jacket spuds with it for tea tonight. Problem is we can never find big spuds to bake they're always like ball-bearings in the Supermärkte near us. Anyone know where we can get big boulder-sized spuds?
UrbanAngel
Viktualienmarkt.
Katrina
Yes Viktualienmarkt has then, but if you want to admit to having no shame whatsoever, and I can't believe I'm posting this, errr, Aldi does them pre-cooked.
Yes pre-cooked big spuds in a box.
Next to the fresh pasta and other ready-mealy stuff.
They are cooked, vaccuum-packed, can be heated in the microwave but don't have crispy skin. If you want crispy skin, bung the oven up to as high as possible and cremate them to doneness I should think. Not like I know or anything.
Some branches of Kaufhof also do them I believe, apparently in the fresh pasta aisle.
By posting this I have brought shame upon my family, I know.
But they are 2 big spuds for just over 1€.

Please don_riina don't shoot me. I don't really buy them, honest.
Crawlie
Nothing can be as bad as inidividually shrink-wrapped jacket potatoes that I saw available over here in Walmart. Also available - individually wrapped onions, beetroot, tomatoes. Oh and the best has to be the 200 gram pork filet portion that is not just inidividually flow-wrapped but in a box that was built for an entire pig. Excellent

I do not normally browse TT recipe posts, let alone respond to them on Friday evening (what lows have we reached here?). BUT, Sarabyrd's hint reminded me of our secret dinner party/BBQ weapon:

Roasted demi-pommes-de-terres a la rosemarie.

1) Peal & halve spuds
2) Put in big bowl & splash over with some olive oil
3) Chop up a sprig or two of FRESH rosemary (eg 3-4 tablespoon's worth)
4) Mix into spuds (in bowl)
5) Place oily, herby spuds onto baking tray (put some Al-foil underneath to prevent mess)
6) Roast for 1/2 hour or so on 150-200 (until brownish)

Can't go wrong.

Make a battery out of them.

You can't just make a suggestion like that without adding a picture tutorial, eurovol. wink.gif

I'm deeply impressed with your Yorkshire puds.

What and spoil all their fun of googling "potato + battery". rolleyes.gif
Jenny L
I wanted to be helpful. Besides I love googling and find visual aids appealing. smile.gif
eurovol
ooooh, visual aids...
gemini
are yorkshire puddings similar or the same as popovers? They look great, but I ave no idea what they are?
Thanks, ignorant American
Jenny L
According to the Joy of Cooking, they are pretty much the same thing.

ah grinner, are you still drunk? Think you're inthe WRONG thread. Unless Yorkshire pudding has anything to do with masturbation blink.gif

STB - you're expertise on Y.P preparation would be appreciated.

51. Mr. Potatohead

I like to buy a potato and carve a dick out of it. Then I just use the potato like a dildo. When I'm done I like to eat the potato.
gemini
well see there, I was so fixated on the beautiful puddings, that that connection went right over my head blink.gif How silly of me to miss the connection between potatoes and masterbation.

Might want to put that in quotes E.V.
