I think the best beer is augustiner, there are a few tents that serve that. Hacker tent is good, Hofbrau good for a lads piss up, take your lady into the pig pen at your own risk.

I admit to a weakness for the small Ammer tent - Augustiner, Franziskaner and the best roast chickens available. And a nostalgic atmosphere of when the Wiesn used to belong to Munich and was not a money-making industry.

Good festivals always turn into money making exercises...

I am coming back to Munich for the Wies'n this year. Only for the opening weekend though. Schottenhammel is my personal favorite. Last year I had a table reserved at Ochsenbraterei and we had a great time. Year before my bf and I went in the afternoon and got a spot in Lowenbrau. That was fun though I don't like Lowenbraue beer. After all the action is over and done, check out Kaefer's or the Weinzelt which stay open later than the others. Boy I can't wait!

we got 2 tables in the schuetzen-festhalle last year in the evening and had a great time. quite a 'small' tent with a great atmosphere and mostly locals.

Hippodrom - reason (don't laugh) is that you can get Weissbier. That Hellas is lethal.

Also I love to make out I am a Chicky Micky!

The Hofbräu tent for me, and def. right in the middle of the tent. It is a great place to meet great people(that speak English)!! cool.gif

What's the wine tent like?

Think I will also be spending a bit of time this year in the Hippodrom tent. Its quite nice in there.

Oh, you guys just picked the Hippodrom because you're hoping to rub elbows with the big stars like Uschi Glas or Boris Becker. wink.gif

I must check out the Hacker tent this year. My 20 year old soccer player students told me it's just, like, the best tent EVER. So apparently all the cool kids go there.

A lot of companies do their invitiations to the Hippodrom, so this is part of the reason why I am going to be there a lot. I actually got an invite from BT this year to go to the Hippodrom. Although our company do is always at Hacker, so I will be there at least once.

The Schottelhammel is good, but it serves Spaten and I don't really like that beer, although all the Oktoberfest beers taste pretty similar.

Hacker is good, and so is the Armbrustschützenzelt..

The Hippodrom might be positioned now as a posh tent but for many, many years it was dog rough. Remember that on the middle weekend in particular, this tent is one of (if not) the closest to public transport so the level of lazy/drunk people who don't want to walk can be high. Very effective security though.
Hacker is the rock tent - band plays AC/DC, a fine thing.

Schützenfestzelt is excellent. I just walked through the Oktoberfest site. It's nearly complete now. I'm getting excited...

what are the differences really?

As a veteran of 21 Oktoberfests, well this year will be 21, I can honestly say that it doesn't matter which tent you go in, you will end up having a great time unless you are clinically dead! Prost! smile.gif

The Wildmoser hut/tent is my favorite - Not too noisey and your shoes do not get wrecked! Highly recommended if you have grey hair and like a good chat! (Yes I am becoming very miserable and boring in my old age)

Hi

We went to the Oktoberfest 2006 and visited Hofbrau and Schottenhammel tents. We have booked to go again for the 1st weekend for 2007. Was wondering which tents were best to visit.

We tried the Paulaner beer at one of the smaller tents and none of us really liked the taste, so would like to avoid those tents serving that beer.

Also as this is our 1st time during an opening weekend, what times should we get to the tents on the Sunday morning? Last year we got in around 9.45am, would this time be ok again?

thanks

No chance. 7:30 would be a good time to get there, either that or camp out overnight.

Chockster, "best tents" is entirely subjective. I and others have discussed this at length in previous threads. It totally depends on what you are looking for. I'll dig up a couple of links to previous opinions in a sec.

Which is your favourite tent?

Getting laid at Oktoberfest...well it might be relevant.

I went to the Otoberfest two years ago, arrived about 1 in the afternoon on a Saturday, and four of us managed to get a table in the Augustiner tent. I must have just been lucky. Will there be loads of ppl queing at 730 in the morning for a table?

How would you do that Keydeck? Some sort of witchcraft?
Keydeck
Yes, there will be, FTC. Although not so much queueing as milling around the doors.

This is from outside one of the tents before the doors opened on the first weekend two years ago...

I am planning on vacationing in Germany and Austria this fall during Oktoberfest. I've been to Oktoberfest before, but I did not sit in the tents last time - kein Platz!! - so we drank outside. This time around, I've been trying to get reservations (we'll be going on a weekday early afternoon - from 12 to 3) and I have received a reservation confirmation from the Kaefer tent (I'll need to wire money by May 18) to secure it. I haven't had success with other tents. Anyways, I will be with a group of anywhere between 8 to 14 people. From what I've read, Kaefer is supposed to be for "gourmands". What's the scene like? I know Hippodrom and Schottenhaml are crazier/busier/younger, but will Kaefer be a snooze? I haven't had much luck securing places elsewhere (despite calling the tent proprietors from info off of the Oktoberfest.de website/faxing them in German -- using my relatively understandable German). Does anyone know what the "vibe" of this tent will be like? Thanks for your help!
sarabyrd
Schickimicki. If you want to see "creations" instead of real Dirndls Käfer is the place to be. All the bussi-bussi in-people go there, the Bayern München soccer team as well. Last time I was there the music was quite decent. Food is expensive but very, very good.
But Hippodrom should be handing out afternoon reservations by now. Give them another try.

Any i can get sat at a table in and served ...

We've had reservations in the Hofbrau, Armbrustschuetzen, Schottenhamel and Hippodrom tents. I've attempted to get reservations in several of the other tents but have been unsuccessful up to this year. *keeps fingers crossed*

Most of our best memories come from the HB tent, but the best day we've ever had at the Fest was last year in the Schottenhamel tent. (Skandal!)

As long as I'm enjoying good beer with great friends, I can make the best out of any tent. (Except the fish tent - I'd get sick before the first beer, but that's another story.)

Last year, we visited Schottenhammel & Hofbrau. This year we would like to go back to Hofbrau, but would like to try other halls. I heard that one of the tents plays rock music, which tent is this and is it any good?

Thanks

Schottenhammel is my most preferred (great atmosphere and mix of people) - Kaefer my least due to the schicky mickiness of it (unless of course it's a corporate event wink.gif).

Will be trying out the Weinzelt and Hofbrau this year.

I have a question about the last day at the Wiesn. Last year, I was in the Hacker-Festzelt on the last day and at closing time, they handed out sparklers to everyone, dimmed the lights and the band did a super long rendition of "Sierra Madre," to which of course everyone sang along to. Everyone was so happy and drunk and at the same time sad to see the end to another great year, but it really made a great closing.

Do any of the other tents do something out of the ordinary at the end of the last night? If so, what? Particularly I am interested in what Schottenhammel does, because Hacker and Schottenhammel are my favorite tents. Thanks!

So, This is my second Oktoberfest, and last year I went to the Hippodrom for opening day, the "wine tent" and the "Haker". But I am wondering which tents TT'ers find to be the best...and why?
