Die Kuh vom Eis bringen - Germany

A colleague has just asked me what the English equivalent of "Die Kuh vom Eis bringen" is.

Any ideas?

I´ve never heard that expression! (The German one)

It means solving a problem, making a delicate situation less so, saving the day so to speak.
A cow was a valuable thing for a small leaseholder, cow stuck on ice = big problem
To get the cow off the ice safely could mean there's still food on the table, potential calves, milk etc., a crippled cow is only good dead.
But cows on ice are tricky, they don't have stabilisers. Hence the saying.

I though it was a dodgy TT phrase for use at the Stachus ice skating rink aftera few Pots of Evil!
