Choosing a schooling plan for your children

Options on kindergartens and international schools

We are relocating to Munich soon and I can't decide what to do about schools. we have 2 boys nearly 3 and 4 who, like me speak no german. I ca't decide whether to go for an international school, but am concerned that we will be staying in Munich for many years and a lot of kids move on, or whether to go for a german kindergarten or an english speaking kindergarten. Any thoughts/ suggestions please? The eldest is a complicated child and notvery confident or emotionally well developed, but clever...we think??
Many thanks biggrin.gif

Why not combine? There are bilingual kindergartens around - ease them into the situation, and if it goes well, they should pick up some German and feel more comfortable with it for when/if they go into a German school. i.e. Maria Roth, Montessori-Priv. Kindergarten in deutscher und englischer Sprache

We are moving to either Cologne or Düsseldorf soon and can't decide what to do on the school front.

I'm a bit confused. Where exactly will you be living: Munich, Cologne or Düsseldorf? unsure.gif

Well obviously within 4 minutes the decision has come to light, and they're moving to Munich smile.gif

I wish I could take decisions so quickly! biggrin.gif

Hi, we are also moving to Munich at the end of August and have a 9 year old daughter. We are also undecided as to what approach to take towards schooling so would be very interested to hear some views from people who have already made the move.

I went to an international school in London and although other students moved on, I didn't. But that never bothered me and I intend to enroll my son in an international school here when he's old enough - they were the best years of my life (cheesy I know, but nonetheless true). If your eldest needs special attention and care, an international school would be the answer as the German schools I've heard of do not cater for individual attention/time and care.

My husband went to a German school until he was 15 and hated every minute of it, until he moved to London and came to my school where he did amazingly well. He says of his experience that the German teachers were uninspiring and did not promote a love of learning, only discipline and rote.

Perhaps you'd like to start by reading some past discussions on the subject. They are easily found through the search function (upper right-hand corner of the screen). If you type in "schools", for example, you will find a number of threads on pre-schools, kindergartens, international schools, etc.

Has anyone heard of a private school in Solln? I've searched the forums and could find no discussion on it. Does anyone know the name of the school? Thanks!

That's probably the "Pater-Rupert-Mayer" looks like a monastery or something on the RHS as you drive out of Solln towards Wolfratshausen. Its not only private but is also an all-day school which is like golddust for someone who wants to work or has decided they don't actually like their kids anymore, remember "kids are for life not just for Christmas" biggrin.gif .

We went to their open day before our 3rd started school and I liked the place. Logistics prevented us from taking it further (or was it because he didn't get a place smile.gif ). I think they do Abitur and the other "Abschlusse" also. I have a friend who has a child there and she thinks it is great. Something tells me it might be a catholic based school but not exclusively for catholics.

If thats not the school you mean then disregard the above !! Here's a link:

Thank you very much, this is the school... I remember the cab driver saying it might be Catholic. Where did you end up sending your kids?

My kids are booked into boarding school in Australia. Then they`ll be just for holidays laugh.gif .

Seriously, this is an option I have if German school doesn't work out or they want a change for a few years.

@Aihmeecarrol

I have all 4 at the European school which is an international-type school for the people who work at the EPO (European Patent Office). I don't work at the EPO but my oldest (finishing school this year) got in on a raffle when she started school and the others got in as sister/brothers with the youngest in primary 2 (this is not guaranteed but we managed it). There is no raffle anymore and the school is bursting at the seams (new EU countries etc.). If you are both non-EU (your profile says North American) then you won't get a place anyway. My opinions on schools in Munich probably shouldn't be aired in an open forum because I know too many teachers but if you want specific information then send me a PM.

The Waldorf school system (3 schools in Munich) and 2 more opening soon would, for me, be a great alternative to standard German schooling for many reasons but you have to like that kind of thing !!

Have read a few of the discussions of international schools. Has anyone ever experienced trouble getting a place for their child in such a school? If so, were you able to secure a place the following year? Thanks.

Hello, everybody,

We will be relocating from Canada in July - August, with two boys 8 and 11. International schooll for us is not an option. Can anyone advise about Wolfratshausen -BadToltz area? We visited both towns in January, and I realy liked the Bad Toltz area. IS there any schools wich would be preferable and more accepting foreign students, who don't speak german? Any advise?
