So the UK is 23rd, mathematically.
Let's end this special "historical" treatment bullschit once and for all.
(Who are the cream of the Rangers, anyway?)
Or give California (or Bavaria) a FIFA franchise.

Joliet Jake
Jul 12 2006, 1:16 pm
Well, since the US just vacated the 5 spot and England is now in, I can only guess that this is the traditional FIFA slotting for over-ranked English-speaking countries.

Maybe next year Canada will be #5.
canuck
Jul 12 2006, 1:25 pm
Talking aboot Canada. How the hell did Canada jump 29 places into 54th place overall, ahead of Wales, Belgium, and Trinidad and Tobago...while playing only 5 games in the past year? They don't even have a coach now...Of course they beat Luxembourg and Cuba who are extremely dangerous, which might account for their rise in the rankings..

Now I know FIFA's rankings are shit.

are you trying to make a point that the UK should have just one national team? this has been discussed before so maybe you can search it if you are bothered.

Try the ELO ratings, which do a mathematical analysis of match results to make "better" results than the way FIFA does theirs.

An intersting take on the 'logic' of the new FIFA ranking system.
Well it still doesn't make sense
clepto
Jul 12 2006, 6:51 pm
Uruguay was 22nd before the WC, and now it's 14th
So we got a lot of points for playing (and winning) so many friendly games while everyone was heading to the WC.
Or maybe, no performance is better than a bad a performance in FIFA's system, and so we got a lot of points for not sucking at the WC

.
It's OK, the ranking is not important and has no rewards, so they can keep calculating it as they want.

Its a new rating system. That's why Uruguay moved up. Has nothing to do with the world cup ...

Jul 13 2006, 8:10 pm
Yes, it's a new system; I would have thought that Uruguy was gonna go down with the new system (hoping the new system made more sense). I find it a bit crazy that we are above Ecuador and Paraguay who eliminated us to qualify to the WC, and Ecuador made it to the next round...Ecuador is 28th. So it seems very unfair.
The ranking of your rival counts a lot, and since we haven't lost to Brazil in the last [a lot of] games, that has given us way too many points. I'm guessing that's one of the reasons.
But again, who cares about this ranking? It's just another useless stat for commentators to use when presenting the teams.
5th???

How much did that cost?
15th would be realistic, but 5th???

So, by the same logic how do the Germans get a 9th place ranking?
pepper
Jul 14 2006, 8:38 am
The rankings are over based over 4 years, and as Germany did not have to qualify, they are missing these games. England had to qualify, then also made it to the Quarters.
Although I must admit, these rankings are a little strange.
Telford
Jul 14 2006, 8:56 am
I find the rankings far better than the old ones, even if the new seedings still seem to favour the South American teams a touch more. I don't want to take anything away from Brazil and Argentina but we saw at the WC that the other South American countries aren't in their bracket.
It's not surprising to see England 5th after they went out in the Quarter-Finals of both Euro 2004 and the World Cup.
Germany is lower because they didn't win a game in 2004. Obviously, the performance at the World Cup can't make up for ALL of that.

Jul 14 2006, 11:17 am

From FIFA:
The host nations of major tournaments only contest friendly match for a certain period. As a result, they may fall in the world ranking.

1. Portugal's poor showing in the 2002 World Cup.
2. The lack of qualifying games for Euro 2004.
I'm sure that if England and Portgual have similar qualifying campaigns for Euro 2008 the Portuguese will gradually overtake England in the rankings.

Because England played more competitive games over the the previous years than Germany did due to Germany automatically qualifying for the World Cup. You don't get points for friendlies
