On the website with the video someone claims that Materazzi told Zidane: "Your nipples feel the same as your mom's". He touches his nipple right before the thing happened.
Why get angry about that? I can confirm that it's true.

You mean got 2 yellows and a red card?
I am pretty sure that the croatian lad got more than that in 1 game against the aussies.

So the videos and referees can see hits and pushes...but what about insults??? if Zidane was really offended by one dirty insult at the worst time of his temper... which can affect his performance...how should he behave? wait till the end of the match and hit him though??? or just smile? or what.
who have seen the follow up yesterday watched the italien goal keeper appologize for Zidane while leaving. If it was a real insult I feel sympathy with Zidane then, but I would prefer he gives him a bunch rather than a head

As I understand there is a discussion about this, as officially the FIFA ruling does not allow video evidence to be used during the game.
One statement says that the fourth and fifth officials say this quickly on a video replay, as none of the referees (linesmen, whatever you want to call them) saw this. Another statement says that the fourth official say it with out the fifth official and told the referee over the mic.
Now the video evidence discussion goes on further ...

I think it was a disgraceful move on Zidane's part, no matter what was said to him, and really diminished the whole mood of the game, and even of the tournament, since it was the final.
It's one thing, as a spectator, to watch two teams really competing as hard as they can to win the final. It's another when ugliness sets in.
I can't believe there are some people who apparently think Zidane's actions might have been excusable, depending on what the other player said.

When Belgium played Holland in '98, Belgian midfielder Lorenzo Staelens gave Patrick Kluivert all sorts of abuse during the match including calling him a rapist in reference to some serious off the pitch trouble the Dutchman had been involved in earlier. Kluivert elbowed the Belgian, was sent off, suspended and no one tried to justify what happened.
Even if what the Guardian says is true, it doesn't justify what Zidane did and is not the first time he's been involved. He stamped on a Saudi (IIRC) in '98 and was sent off with Juventus for another, though much less spectacular, head-butt.

Zidane squandered his own last game, his overall reputation, and possibly a victory for his team, just because of some trash talking.
What could Materazzi have said that could possibly have been worth that price?

For a good laugh (especially if you've seen the YouTube.com compilation of Materazzi's past "antics") you should read what Materazzi's father has to say in the above article. Among other things:
QUOTE
Mi ha appena riferito di avere subito una provocazione, come del resto è avvenuto negli ultimi due anni. E' come se ce l'avessero con lui, ogni volta. Marco nelle ultime due stagioni le ha solo prese (...).
In short, Materazzi was provoked, as so often in the past two years, when he was always on the receiving end.

Current betting on what Materazzi said to Zidane:
"See all these names tattooed on my arms - this is your mother, this is your sister, and this is your wife." 8-1
"Cor, you sweat more than your wife does!" 11-1
"Your daughter's having Wayne Rooney's lovechild." 20-1
"I've got hair growth formula on my shirt." 33-1
"I bet you a fiver you can't headbutt me in the chest." 33-1
"I bet I can do a better rhino impression than you." 66-1
"My name's worth more than yours in Scrabble." 100-1

Final game
On July 9, 2006, Zidane became one of only four footballers to achieve the feat of scoring in two different World Cup final matches (he scored twice in the 1998 FIFA World Cup final), sharing the honour with Pelé, Paul Breitner, and Vavá. He scored in the seventh minute from the penalty spot. He nearly headed in the ball during the first period of extra time but it was saved by Gianluigi Buffon. His career ended when he was sent off for headbutting Italy's Marco Materazzi in the chest in the 110th minute. He was the fourth person to have been sent off in a World Cup final and the first to be sent off during extra time. The game ended in a 1-1 draw and Italy won the championship after a penalty kick shootout. His manager, Raymond Domenech has claimed he was provoked by Materazzi. Team members reported that Zidane acted in a response to a racial slur by Materazzi, while the Italian side has categorically denied that he had any role in the provocation of Zidane.[7]Despite this, on July 10, 2006, Zidane was awarded the Golden Ball for the best player in the 2006 World Cup. The winner was selected by a poll of journalists covering the tournament; Zidane polled 2012 points, ahead of Fabio Cannavaro, who polled 1977 points.[8]

The videos on YouTube show Materazzi as a "devastater" when every other player does similar things. Besides he didn't commit any foul on Zidane, apart from rubbing his nipple.
I don't see reasons of all this noise coming out.
If you look very carefully at Zidane and Materazzi in real time you see the big Italian defender rub Zidane's left nipple. Zidane then smiles as he turns away, and I swear I can lip read Materazzi saying, "Hey! You've got a really nice arse."
Dunno, but maybe what Zidane did was related.

Zidane should of belted him properly if he was going to do anything stupid. It was a pathetic headbutt and hardly hurt the Italian player. Zidane let things sadly get to him-maybe it would have been better to wait for revenge by scoring or laugh at Materazzi. Easier said than done tho especially with all the emotion involved with the game. For people to criticize Zidane is stupid-They have no idea the Pressure he was under nor that its human to lose control sometimes. He is Human and makes mistakes. Its OK for fans to get emotional in a game so why not players? He made a mistake -so what.

If Materazzi said "I slept with your mother last night, and she is an Algerian whore", the better thing would have been to answer back with something like "No mate, that was your own mother, she just pretends to be Algerian so you think she's hot". Leave the headbutting out of it.
