Berlin Love Parade 2006

Saturday 15.Jul.2006

The Love Parade will return to Berlin this weekend (Saturday 15th July 2006) after being canceled in 2004 and 2005 due to a lack of funds. The 2006 was rescued after the gym chain 'McFit' offered a million euros to host the event. Taking place just one week after the World Cup final, the mood in Berlin is likely to be particularly elevated.

For those who don't know, the Love Parade is a popular dance music festival and parade that originated in Berlin 1989. Over a million people attended each year from 1997 through 2000. Since then organisational problems have caused attendance numbers to drop.

As well as enjoying dance/electronic music the Love parade is also a place to exhibit and enjoy other people's exhibitionist tendencies. The crowd is quite imaginative in terms of clothing (or the lack thereof) and appearance.

The parade takes place on "Straße des 17. Juni" which is in the center of Berlin, near the Tiergarten Park and the Brandenburg Gate.

Some people from Munich are thinking about travelling up to Berlin for the weekend. See the TT topic: Berlin Love Parade - who from Munich is going?

I went twice in its heyday, back in 1999 and 2000, when I was still a lad. It was very cool; 1.5 million people were there in 1999. It will be interesting to see how many people turn up this year; the last Parade had "only" 500,000 people, which isn't really enough to make it commercially viable.

The reason it was cancelled for two years was lack of funding. The event was originally a "political protest" and so the organisors didn't have to pay to hold the event. The city of Berlin changed its status to a commercial event, and so the organisors couldn't afford to hold it. In 2002, they were forced to postpone it by a week with only 6 weeks' notice, which messed things up for a lot of people. That dissuaded a lot of people from going in future years, because they couldn't be sure it would actually take place.

The Berlin Love Parade has probably had its heyday, but it has spawned numerous imitators and its success can still be seen elsewhere. The Zürich Street Parade, for example, is a Love Parade spin-off and is now Europe's largest street festival, beating the long-established Notting Hill Carnival in terms of attendance.
