I lost my Social Security card (well, I left it in my room in NJ and my parents cleaned it out and put everything in boxes in the basement so I know its there somewhere), and was wondering if its possible to get a new one through the US Consulate?
You can download the necessary paperwork from the SSA website, get it notarized along with proof of who you are, and mail it back to the States. I don't think the Consulate issues SSN cards.

I lost my social security card, filled out some form at the consulate and got a new one in the mail about a month later. Didn't have to notarize anything. Maybe I got lucky?
Hmmm...I like your method better. I've been without a card for a while because I couldn't be arsed to get anything notarized...

No problem. IIRC the consulate mails it for you as they are the ones that sort of voucher for your identity, therefore meaning that you don't need to get anything notarized. In any case, I distinctly remember not having to go to a third party to get it done and that it was actually quick and easy.

Lost it? Well, mine disappeared (with my purse and wallet) about 20 years ago. I had tried to get it replaced about 10 years ago but the paperwork was just ridiculous so, I gave up. I have never, ever, needed it. Not for getting my passport, for jobs or anything. Really, what do you need it for?

Wonder if this route would work for the "New Identity" thread

yea, I'm with kitkat: for what do you need to have soc. card?
(the actual card / piece of paper - just memorize your number and be done with it.)
The hours at the consulate
have changed Note the piece about SSN card requests:

I will join the chorus on this thread and say that I also have not had a social security card for many years and have never been asked to show it. As long as you have the number committed to memory, the card itself is probably unnecessary.
However, seeing this thread reminded me that I have never heard anything regarding the application for a social security number that I filled out when I registered my daughter's birth last year, as recommended by the consulate. Does anyone have any experience with getting a social security number for an infant?
