OB docs for twins and other high-risk births - Munich

Doctors, gynecologists, midwife recommendations

Hello everyone,
I have been lurking on this board for a while and using all your great informaiton.
I hope you can help me out.
I am currently living in Serbia and would not feel comfortable giving birth here, so I will be giving birth in Munich instead.
The situation is further complicated by the fact that we just found out we will be having twins! And that they are most likely monochorionic (share a placenta).
This makes the pregnancy somewhat more high-risk and I was hoping someone here could recomend a high-risk doctor or a doctor with experience in delivering multiples.
I appreciate your help and advice!
(sorry so long!)

Hi cpop - I can only recommend my ob/gyn as I think she is fantastic and I know she delivered at least 2 sets of twins last year. She only takes private patients and is affiliated with the Geisenhofer Frauenklinik here in Munich. I'm sure she'd be willing to even just talk to you over the phone if she was not able to cater for your high risk pregnancy; and would be definately able to refer you to another ob/gyn that could. She speaks perfect English.

Good luck and best wishes.

Congrats on the twin pregnancy!
Our twins are now 18 months old and despite being warned that the pregnancy was high risk, we ended up with two full size bubs that went full term and were 100% healthy. Even with twins, you can have a completely normal pregnancy - although you will be enormous once you pass around 30 weeks.
Our twins were born by emergency caesarian, after a text-book twin pregnancy. It was all handled extremely professionally and competently and while a little dramatic, we got the result we wanted - two healthy babies.
There is plenty of info out on the net on twin sites. My best advice is to prepare yourself as much as you can. Read anything about twins you can get your hands on, try to spend a day with someone who already has young twins so you can see what you are in for in terms of day-to-day routines, visit the hospital and ask to see their neo-natal intensive care unit so you know what to expect if your babies end up there.
Lots of luck and welcome to the Multiples club!

PS: Sorry - can't recommend a Dr unless you want to have your babies in Australia!

Hi there,

I'm expecting twins myself in a few months, and have been seeing Dr Roemish at the Fuenf Hoefe practice as a gynaecologist (he speaks fluent English since he worked in the US for a while). He recommended giving birth to my twins at Klinikum Grosshadern because they have the intensive care facilities for newborns, and should a caesarian be necessary, they can have the babies out of the womb within 3 minutes of deciding to do a caesarian (apparently this speed is unusually fast). He used to work at the hospital and so I guess he knows it quite well.

I guess it's possible to follow the pregnancy through with the doctor at the hospital itself, rather than seeing a gynaecologist elsewhere. I've met the doctor in charge of obstetrics at the hospital - he was very nice, reassuring, helpful and spoke English, but unfortunately I don't remember his name. If you are interested, I could find it out.

If you wanted to check out the facilities at Klinikum Grosshadern, they have an open evening every Thursday at 6.30pm, where you can meet the midwives, doctors, see the rooms and ask any questions.

All the very best with your pregnancy!

Can anyone recommend a good GYN that maybe specializes in high risk cases and IVF?

Thanks.

My wife and I are having twins. We live in Munich and are trying to make sure we have the right doctor. I am worried because we have been twice to the doctor and she did not even weigh her. Is that normal? The last time we were there was when we learned there were twins (yeah!) but I just feel like the doctor was not being very detail-oriented. I am concerned for my wife. Does anyone have any tips on dealing with Germany OBGYNs? What if we change doctors? Is that tricky to do? Can we go and try another doctor out or do we have to tell our current doctor first? Help?!

you can go to any doctor you want. If you don't feel comfortable with the gyno then FOR SURE find a new one. It is important that you 2 feel good about the attention and care you are getting. I can recommend Dr. Post in schwabing. Phone number is 3006091-2.
I went to him throughout my pregnancy and he was very thorough and gave you time to ask questions without feeling rushed. He also speaks some English.

Good luck!!

I had excellent care from Dr. Georg Kleiber who has a practice in Kirchenstraße 7, Gröbenzell. It is 2 minutes from the S-Bahn and he speaks English. As your wife is doing twins I imagine there is an increased chance of a Caesarian. Dr. Kleiber performed my Caesarian at 1 o'oclock in the morning - I had the feeling he could have done it with his eyes closed - and I experienced no pain afterwards - he used a technique whereby the abdominal muscles are not cut, just moved out of the way to get to the uterus (sorry it sounds so unscientific). Amazing and not performed everywhere as I understand. He has a real vocation to help women.

Congrats on being an expecting father!
I don't have a recommendation for a gynecologist, since mine no longer accepts new patients, but would like to recommend the midwives at the Nannhofen Birthing Center. (they have a web site that you can find- search for "Geburtshaus Nannhofen") Both midwives speak English and are extremely qualified- you can give birth at their birthing center or have a homebirth. In Germany you can also go to midwives for prenatal checkups. I personally found it much more personal and they are often more helpful than doctors (who have trained to help in an emergency but don't have as much knowledge about normal pregnancy and birth as midwives).
By the way, a cesarean is not necessarily a per se for twin pregnancies.

I can HIGHLY recommend Dr. Uwe Hasbargen and his team at the Klinikum Grosshadern. I just had my twins there this past spring after a high risk pregnancy. I wound up on bedrest in the hospital for 14 weeks but my babies were born at full term and were healthy. Dr. Hasbargen and his team there were excellent (all the doctors and most of the nurses also spoke fluent English). They specialize in multiples and high-risk pregnancies. Many people agree that this is the best place to go in Munich if you are carrying multiple babies.
