Legislation gone mad - is your pole vertical?

How to fly the George Cross when in England

Toytown Germany > Discussion forum > Themes > Miscellaneous

Flying the George Cross is illegal if on a non upright pole (truly vertical). The law will be changed in the next month and the government is appealing to council leaders not to enforce the law during the WC!! Apparently it's only applicable to buildings. And furthermore only navy ships can fly the Britannia at sea. huh.gif

Legislation gone mad

its just one of those old rules that nobody has ever bothered to revoke and now some hack has tried to make a story about it.

Off-topic but on-topic for ridiculous flag legislature.

The American flag is not allowed to touch the ground at any time and must be taken down off it's flag pole every night. I asssume this is country wide but I can only vouch for Hawaii where we encountered it first hand.
UrbanAngel
I also heard that it's illegal to burn the American flag, as well as destroy English stamps as the Queen's head is on them.

Yep, its considered treason. Same goes for coins and no doubt many other depictions of the monarch.

Shit, when I think of all the used envelopes that I´ve chucked into the fire - I should be had up for high treason!
mj davey

Correct on the first part. If flown at night it should be lit (spotlight, although ambient light is acceptable if the flag can be clearly seen).

Sorry, you heard wrong. Once a flag touches the ground, etiquette used to dictate that the flag then either be buried or burned, though this is usually ignored. Burial is acceptable for worn-out flags but burning -- according to the law -- is preferable.

More US flag etiquette for you, including the entire text of USC 4 Chapter 1 in a much more legible format than the gubmint sites offer.

Off topic but fits: My Stars and Stripes fell off the wall last night and was on the floor this morning. Do I now have to bury/burn it? If the latter, I have a big problem as I've stopped smoking and don't have a lighter. Who will meet me with a lighter/matches/flintstone where for the sacrificial rite? Or does parquet floor not count as ground?
Thanks!

I can give you a lighter but these days you're allowed to treat the flag "respectfully" and wash it after it hits the ground. Wear a nice outfit and hand-wash it in Woolite.

sarabyrd
Can't wash it till after the Final, it's in constant use.

Somebody care to tell me quite which piece of legislation that law is contained in? Sounds like bollocks to me...

Finding a lighter will be the least of your troubles. You'll probably have to fill out reams of forms in triplicate just to get the Zulassung to have the fire, and then more again to get the permission for a burial. You'll also have to check your Mietvertrag in case there's a clause forbidding you from having a fire on your balcony/terrace or in your garden.
Yeti
Malcolm_Spudbury is right, in Germany it's probably less complicated to burn down your apartment with the flag inside it and claim the insurance.
Exile
I suspect there are a few groups who would be happy to burn it for you.
I misheard somewhere than the official way to dispose of a soiled Union Jack is to make a mini-dress out of it.

Is your pole vertical?

Unless it is, you might need to take corrective action...
