How to get the cheapest fares on a train ticket

I have to get a one-way train ticket from Munich to Goettingen on a Wednesday afternoon. I looked up DBahn and they tickets are 87€...does anyone know of any special deals to get cheap DB Tickets...this just seems excessive to me.

here you can find some information about train tickets. It all depends on how long in advance you buy your tickets. I must reckon that for Göttingen there may not be too many possibilities, but just take a look at the offers shown in the DB site or go to hauptbahnhof and ask directly there.

EUR 87 is the standard single price by ICE

Assuming you don't want to do a local trains only combo as that turns a 4 hour jounrey into an 8 hour journey but would halve the price.

Unless you want a return booked in advance or want to invest in a bahn Card which will potentially save you a LOT of money if you make inter state journeys fairly often then EUR 87 is the price.

It would have helped if you'd said which Wednesday you want to travel -- as has been pointed out, booking a return in advance will save you 25% or 50%, especially if you're flexible time-wise. A Bahncard will save you an additional 25% or 50%, bringing your journey down to less than €22 each way.

But given that Göttingen is nearly 500kms away, and you're travelling on a fast, comfortable intercity train, I don't find €87 particularly expensive.

If price really is an issue and you don't need a return, you can use the Länder tickets to get there; €18 for a Bayern Ticket Single, and then whatever you need up there. But the journey will take nine hours instead of four.

STB, you used to be able to under the interim scheme they had. but now that BahnCard 50 is back you can't combine BahnCard and SparTickets to get 75% off the price. 50% is the maximum discount.

I pick the 87€ 4 hour trip please sir !!!

The money is not really an issue, I guess it is just still weird for me to pay more for a train ticket than for a plane ticket (I'm from Australia...not so many budget airlines there!!)

Anyway thanks for your help !

Tip:

Select the WM Angebote and select destination as Hannover (Train goes via Gottingen). But you need to buy a return ticket. If you select the direct ICE at 11:35 hrs to Hannover, you get a return ticket for EUR 69. For subsequent ICEs, it is EUR 79. Plus 1.5 EUR for seat reservation.

The deals offered by the budget airlines have indeed distorted people's perspectives on how much one should pay to travel medium and long distances. Once the airlines have to start paying for the damage and disruption they cause (tax on the fuel they use would be a fair and obvious starting point), the days of one-cent flights will quickly come to an end.

Oh yeah, forgotten about that. I remember all the Bahncard 50 holders up in arms, because they were paying the same price as people without a Bahncard who booked in advance. Still, €33 each way is cheap as well!

Hannover's the nearest airport isn't it?

Try getting a single ticket on Lufthansa at the last minute. Add on the time and cost of getting to the airport, security, check in etc etc. It's gonna cost a LOT more than €87.
