Little Oktoberfest - cancelled as of 2006

At the former American military base in Giesing

[floatright]Attached image[/floatright]They are having it again. The "Little Oktoberfest" is taking place at the former American military base on Lincolnstraße in Giesing. It runs from Saturday 24th June until the big celebrations on Tuesday 4th July.

For years this was the only big 4th of July "American Independence Day" event in Munich, mainly frequented by Germans but with a unique combination of old time car collectors, square dancers, mexican beer and donuts, it's definately a kitschy classic.

Fireworks on the 4th of July this year as well.

Note that the website has not been updated for this year: www.littleoktoberfest.de

See the TT chat from previous years for some more snippets of information:Here's the up-to-date German info...

I'm awaiting Keydeck and his comment on how shit this is going to be.

Then again, I live right next to it and, well, it's beer is it not?

Had a giggle there last year although it is pikey central!!

Oh I LOVED the Little O'Fest when I used to live here as a child!!! It was wonderful! They had rides and food, tents and all kinds of things. I would love to go again, just to see if it's changed at all. Ah...nostalgia...
Bubble Gum
I went to this when I was a kid too!

@Bern, is this where our school was?

You'll be waiting. I've made whatever comments I'm gonna make a couple of times already. They're there for the searching. It suits some and not others, c'est la vie.

Please note that this has been cancelled. The next one will most likely be in 2007 for their 50th anniversary.

What a shame, this used to be a belting do in the 80's when it was called McGraw Kaserne. Fond memories of good beer and cheap cigarettes from friends on the base who would risk getting a bollocking buying them from the PX for us.
Watching 6'5" + no neck American Army Military Police steaming in to their own people at the fest if they just looked the slightest bit rowdy.
Was a blast but i thought in my fading memories that it used to be held later than this just not long before the real O'Fest ?

Bubble Gum,

Yes, this is where our school was/is. I don't really even care about the fest but it would be very much like taking a walk down memory lane to go there. I went to the housing area not too long ago and it's sad to see what it has become.

I can't speak to what the O-Fest has become but it used to be a lot of fun, but my perspective was somewhat different back then than it is now. I went for the rides and such then. I also worked at the corn tent. That was in 91...that was supposed to be the last year it took place but it appears as though they have kept up the tradition. I would venture to guess that it isn't as good as it once was if for no other reason than the fact that it is supposed to be the German-American O-Fest. Most of the Americans left in 91/92. I can't imagine that the organization/planning is the same as it was but I have no idea. It's a moot point anyway, as UrbanAngel says it's been cancelled.

Yes definitely not there this year, took a look down there this evening and you cannot even get close to that area because of all the roadworks that have been going on. It would have been impossible to set it all up and get people to it because of the lack of access.

Well maybe next year then

You want a mini-O'fest head on out the the Erdinger Herbst fest, the Friesing Herbsfest or the many others that will be starting in the next month or 2.

Why was it cancelled?

The newspaper I read it in (Bogenhausener) didn't say.

I went to the Little Oktoberfest a few years ago and it was pretty good. I especially like how it culminated in a great fireworks show at the end of the night.

Just went to the website but it appears the domain is no longer up. Did this event just die forever???

Looks like it.. But see my prev. post for alternatives.
