It's an allowance that is paid to an employee when they have to live away from home i.e. their family. Can't think of the word. Separation pay was suggested, but that sounds wrong. Help would be appreciated.

Separation pay or separation allowance? Location allowance could also get the meaning across that it is paid only to whom is away.

I think it's usually called "Family Separation Allowance" (i.e. "separation allowance" by itself may not be sufficiently clear).

Googling around, I found that the US military has a "Family Separation Allowance (FSA)" and there are other references to a "foreign posting allowance".

there are other references to a "foreign posting allowance".
Foreign postings often include the whole family (diplomatic service, for example) so I'm not sure the term would necessarily apply here.
