Last year we had a great time at the 4th of July event...and since I need to get my schedule figured out for next month pretty damn quick here...I'm just curious if there's anything going on.
Sure doesn't look like it...

We got shut out and they want to do their own thing. I am not sure that they are going to do anything now. (They being Amerika Haus).
We are going to meet up with our other partners from last year on that Sunday. See Dems Abroad thread for the particulars. I think that I posted it all there. I better go look to make sure.

You can say that again. We showed them how to put on a party for Americans that brought in over 800 people and they end up pissing everyone off that made it happen. Seriously, all Americans should check out the DA thread and make your plans accordingly. Mini-golf anyone?

the "you should move back to alabama" thread?
EDIT: I'd like to apologize to any democrats from alabama...there's just so few of you...

I don't even own a strop and probably wouldn't even if I did know what it was.

It's the 4th of July, for crying out loud. Bury politics for one bloody day and celebrate that which is great about our country.

I didn't bring it up. I was forced into responding to the more juvenile amongst us. As last year, all are welcome and it will be a blast I am sure. I am looking forward to the mini-golf.

Ah, nevermind. I will let the peeps in the states take care of that attitude of yours. I just hope it comes from a fist and not a gun.

And here I am in Southern California, anticipating the potential visit from Crawlie and Winegirl because I am just bored of the "sense of humor" people have out here.
Can't wait to laugh til my belly hurts at Crawlie's sense of humor attitude.

I have the 4th of July off and lots of family around. If the weather be good I was going to BBQ at a lake in the afternoon and set off illegal fireworks when it gets dark(German law says you can only set off fireworks on New Year's Eve).

Southern California - check
Berkeley - check
Daisy and IPJ... Fire up the barbecue. We'll bring the wine

I was just thinking about this today! I somehow managed to the get the day off

I would definitely love to spend some quality time with other Americans celebrating July 4th.
@eurovol- I realize politics will be involved de facto, but in all seriousness, if I were to go to the DA thing, would I be the only Republican there? Would my political affiliation make me an outcast?
DDBug
Jun 21 2006, 4:42 pm
Wahoo - there are plenty of closet republicans around

as well as closet democrats, libertarians, communists, whatever. The dems abroad has been very good at getting everyone registered, no matter what their political affiliation. So I don't think a BBQ will be a problem

The 4th is a celebration of America and not a celebration of Democrats or Republicans. There will be nothing going on on the actual 4th as everyone (well, almost everyone) will be working. The 2nd will definitely be quality time with people wishing to celebrate and very little to do with actual politics outside of promoting voter registration by all eligible US citizens.
If you want to have something on the 4th, then plan it, post it and hope they will come. Something like a dinner at a steak or rib house. I would be interested in something like that in addition to the beer garden and mini golf on Sunday.

That's too bad about the
Amerika Haus thing. Last year I went and it was really a lot of fun- I even won the pie baking contest! I have no idea if I was the only Republican or not- honestly it was pretty non-political, aside from the little table where you could register for all the DA stuff.
I agree that the 4th of July was great last year. It was like a genuine small town picnic-- a chance to show my kids what 4th of July is. I am still a bit confused. Is there another picnic somewhere? Should I be looking at the Democrats Abroad website? And, well this is totally off topic, but does USA have a chance against Ghana? I have three little USA flags in front of our door and I am just wondering how long I will get to keep them there!

So sorry, you missed your BIG chance to see the 'fearless leader' in Vienna yesterday (grunt). I'm sure there are some Repubes here in Munich; however most if they are smart, live underground.

We will be joining together with some other US-focused groups around Munich to celebrate July 4th in style - with a jazz band, delicious food and drinks, and the 2nd Annual President's Cup Championship Invitational, our now legendary Mini-Golf Tournament. "Green fees" will be assessed based on participants.

@ Eurovol: do you have any further info on what happened this year at the
Amerika Haus? I just do find it so amazing that despite all the F-ups on the A.H. side, the party was such a blast, and quite frankly the perfect location, and yet they have let that event drop.
They are the biggest bunch of lame asses I have ever had the displeasure of working with, but I would have certainly used them for their local.
By the way I just opened my last case of our US micro-beer from that event, where is Lupo when you need him?
I will really miss a 4th celebration this year...I am feeling quite homesick of late. At least I get off that day...working for an American "company" and all.

Come to the WaWi.
As for AH, I haven't heard a thing since they said that they would do their own this year.

Jun 27 2006, 6:55 pm
Well, I have a kiddo singing on
hohenzollernplatz on the 2nd. So that clinches not driving to the burbs for the party (I am lazy and hate having to go out of my way for things like that, that's why I pay Schwabing rent prices

).
For years there was no major 4th festival here - the closest was the little oktoberfest, and I don't know if they even do that anymore. So, yeah, last year's event was cool in that regard.
Edit
I lied.
