We're about to leave for our 6 month stay in Munich. My daughter (2 years old) is a big fan of peanut butter. Sometimes it's the only protein I can get her to eat. Since we'll be in Munich only 6 months, I thought I might bring a jar of peanut butter with us, but I don't want to bother with it if you can find it in Munich. So... can I get it there? I've not had any luck finding it in other European countries. Thanks!

Hi Mindy,
I have also recently moved to Munich and am still working out which food products from home I can get hold of!! Can reassure you though that Peanut Butter is no problem. Try the food hall in the basement of the
Hertie Store at
Hauptbahnhof.
Hope the move goes well.

Peanut butter is no problem at all, at least not in the city. Most of the larger supermarkets sell it and it's even available at the railway station.

As a big fan of peanut butter myself, I can tell you that even though peanut butter is available here...it is no where near as good as North American peanut butter. The closest peanut butter here is called Sun Pat...available at stores like Hertie (near main station) or Kaufhof (both
Stachus and
Marienplatz locations). I personally find it kinda tasteless and thin. The colour is all wrong. It also seems to have a grainy texture -- even the smooth brand (not sure if your daughter likes crunchy or smooth).
I buy Reese's brand from the North American shelves in
Hertie and it is quite pricey (more than 6 euros for a smallish jar). I recently had someone bring over Kraft (the one with the bear on it!!) from Canada with them because my peanut butter needs were not being met
If you plan to wean your daughter on to a German brand, I recommend bringing the kind she likes and maybe mixing the two...or having it as a back-up plan
Good luck!

I have only ever seen the 350g jar size. (two stacked on each other is like a can of soda) The brand that
Tengelmann sells is "Original American" and the red one is 'delicate creamy' and the blue 'super crunchy' which ends up being just regular creamy and crunchy.
I have looked for larger jars (of any brand) but haven't run across them.
MMMMMmmmmm... peanutbutter and cheese toast.

At most of the places where they sell peanut butter, you'll also find brownie mix, marshmallow fluff, microwave popcorn, pam, oreos, chips ahoy, macaroni and cheese, and some other things that you wouldn't normally buy at home but are novel American items. Oh yeah, and you'll also find Bisquick and cheap(er) syrup (maple costs a fortune here).

yea peanut butter can be found at someplaces that have international food sections but it is really super expensive, so i'd bring ur own! i usually have my parents send me some along with some other things i cant get here..atleast not cheaply. and i wouldnt rely on eating the german brands because some of my friends have had it and they said its nasty. and some of my german friends have tried it and then said they dont like peanut butter... but then when they try the american stuff they change their mind.. so yea, bring ur own!

Agree with IPJ and Erdb! This is a two year old we're talking about folks - DEFINITELY bring your own peanut butter. The stuff here is BAD, and last I looked they only had Reeses brand at
Hertie.
I've found Rapunzel "American Style" crunchy peanut butter. Even has a red, white and blue label with the statue of liberty outline. (puts hand over heart) Available in the bio stores. Makes a good PB&J or okay even on a spoon by itself.

Tengelmann's has some nice American peanut butter. It'll hold me over for a while.

Hiya
The crunchy peanut butter in Spar is good but I only eat crunchy and hate the creamy stuff. Jif is still too creamy for me.

PS For the Brits reading this thread, the Indian/Asian shop in
Hauptbahnhof (in the split level between U-Bahn and DB) stocks Horlicks, Bird's Custard, Dettol, PG, Tetley, Pataks and Lion Baking Powder plus Bicarb. English is also spoken.

Barney's Best brand creamy, purchased at Tengleman's (used to be at HL, but seemingly no longer), tastes a lot like Skippy smooth and helps satisfy the craving. NOT to be confused with the Grandy brand, which tastes like brown vaseline (or how I might think vaseline would taste if I ate a spoonful of it), but which tries to masquerade its jar like the Barney jar. fcukers (shudders at the memory).
this is not a paid advertisement. Just thought I'd share...

in vienna i found skippy pb in an asian food store... so maybe some asian stores here in munich have it too
<shrug>
All this PB info has been incorporated into this page in the Guide, which already talked about
Hertie and Sunpat being available at the Asian shops:
British and American Foods in MunichPeanut Butter now has its own entire section. And do be aware that when someone says "Tengelmann has this" they are probably referring to the Tengelmann where they live. All those chain shops have different selections at different locations. It would be great if people would write "The
Tengelmann at Pilgersheimerstr. 234 has this"...
If you've anything to update on that page, please write a comment there and it's immediately visible!

I picked up a jar of "Alnatura Erdnuss Creme" in the "Bio" section at HIT. Tasted OK to me, but I'm no connoisseur...
