Hi, I'm fairly new in Munich, been here only a few months. I would like to get some fly fishing done over the summer days but am forced to go to Austria due to the license issue.

Does anybody have some info to share, places, flies, tips and tricks? I do not know Austria very well, if at all.

River fly fishing is new to me as well as I have spent most of my time in Salt water so really looking for info here from basic right through.

Thanks

Hi Dale,

I've fished for many years in Austria and there are some nice rivers there. However, the biggest drawback
is the price of a license. It's quite normal to pay between 50-100 € for a day of fishing. There are even rivers
that are more expenisve than that. In some rivers there are almost no wild fish present, i.e. the fish populations are sustained by stocking.

I've fished the Gmundner Traun in Oberösterreich many times and I really like that river. It's probably the most famous of the Austrain rivers . But you will probably have a hard time finding the right places the first time you go there. The river Gail around the Lesachtaal in Kärnten is very nice. The Ager in Oberösterreich is also quite good. I can't recommend the Mur , since it's very popular with people who go rafting and canoeing and it ruins the fishing. I wouldn't care much if I payed 20 € a day , but it costs around 60 € .
I've never fished the Steyer or the Salza, they are supposed to be the best rivers in Austria, but very expensive indeed . Goiserer Traun is also supposed to be great and it looks great, but I've not tried it yet. My latest information is that it cost 86 € a day to fish there.

I don't know if you are fluent in German and understand Bavarian, but there are a few Stammtisches for Fly Fishermen in the Munich area.

I did a google search as well but found that most of the sites refer you to some or another guide that is happy to take you on a days fishing at x€ for this that and the next thing...

Thanks for the Info Nothern Light, I will have a look at those rivers on the map and come back to you with more specific questions if you don't mind. Places etc... How do I get the license? Are there registration offices or is it a case of finding a local fishing shop?

As for the German, well my Techinical German is coming along ok, but my social German seems to be being left behind? That's what happens when you learn German at work... So no, not good enough for a Stammtische I would reckon.

Dale,

Are you already registred as a resident here ? If you aren't registred you should be able to get a "Fischereischein" for tourists . It means that you don't have to take the test and do the compulsory lessons to be able to fish in Germany. I think that a Fischereischein for tourists is valid for 3 months.
There are some places that are nice on this side of the border as well, such as Deutsche and Weisse Traun
near Siegsdorf. Licenses are availabe through Rudi Heger, he has a flyshop there, but you have to reserve in advance.

The licenses for Gmundner Traun in Austria are available through Freunde der Gmundner Traun or "Wirt am Bach" which is a hotel near the Traun. You can find their Websites with help of google.

hi, Im moving to munich August and would like to be able to fly fish in the area. Are you serious you have to take a test? is this just for game fish or any? just rivers or still waters too? I guess it would stop total novices casting a fly in to their earlobe and falling into the river tangled in their lines screaming ACHTUNG! to the other people fishing downstream. I'll do some more research but thought i'd post to ask what the fishing is like. Any feedback appreciated, Cheers
