Having invested in an HD plasma telly with HD Tuner is it possible to get Sky HD in Germany,

I believe ProSieben and Sat1 broadcast from the Astra 1 Sat in HD, however I haven't managed to find them. The best I have got so far as the Astra test channels, but they are pretty good.

Some premiere channels are in HD too..

BBC are broadcasting HD too. Sky HD started in UK late last month, but it's not (easilly) available abroad yet as the grey market can't get their hands on boxes, there are so few. First reports are not positive. Too early. Wait until the end of the year when additional systems (from pace) come on the market and the firmware bugs are ironed out...

Sounds like people are being quoted mid-August and September if they order now in the UK. This makes it look damn hard to get over here I think.

I am a bit disappointed as I have been waiting months for the release of these, as I really want the hard drive recording of SKY+ but decided to wait until the HD version was out of course.

When you buy these things unsubsidised over here of course it costs more, so I dont really want to pay a few hundred pounds for SKY+ now, when the HD version is semi-released already. That said I might just bite the bullet, take SKY+ now and wait for the HD whenever. sad.gif

Hi yorkshire lad, the boxes you say are hard to get and report Pace will supply are they HD tuners? my system came with a separate HD tuner I assume that to receive the BBC transmissions you will need the box you referred to, doh

The current problem for the grey market is that there are so few boxes and Sky are only providing them themselves to existing customers. That means a Sky monkey visits and fits the system and/or upgrades the dish. Unfortunately their installation area does not cover Bavaria yet smile.gif. The grey marketeers need to get these systems out of UK homes to sell onto the foreign market. Many people don't give them up easilly, or at least not without a seriously greased palm.
The first SkyHD boxes on the market are manufactured for Sky by Thomson - there have been no end of problems and quite a high failure rate in the early days, as always with new technology. In particular it seems that SD reception is poor, which is not good when only around 5% of output is HD in the first place. Sky will bring Pace-manufactured models on line later this year, and when enough are available will probably let the private market have a go.

BBC transmissions are free-to-air - no need for any Sky box for these. Just any HD-compatible satellite receiver that supports MPEG4 (h.264)
