Tourists flooding into Munich for the World Cup

What weirdness have you witnessed?

Did any of you see the David Hasselhoff English supporters at the Chinese tower on Sat for the England game? Absolutely priceless. A bunch of blokes all wearing curly wigs and very naff "the hoff" t-shirts. I wonder what our germans thought of them and their "Hoff" music love laugh.gif

They showed up in Murphy's later on that evening.

Was in munich on Friday night for the opening match...on the way back, we were tryin to find the correct platform to catch our S-bahn from marienplatz to Hbf...it was a bit confusing as there were (as expected) ALOT of people around...an elderly german couple who would normally give you a 'why are you in my city?' look if you ever made the mistake of asking them for directions actually APPROACHED US VOLUNTARILY and asked where we wanted to go...and in ENGLISH..SMILING too...I was a little scared by the whole thing

...Does that mean if Germany wins the world cup, people will be nice here for the rest of the year? Or am I being a tad too optimistic?

Seen in Marienhof Saturday afternoon. I thought these guys were England fans, but the one with the red cross explained that he was really a Knight Templar.

Unfortunately, I think that's too optimistic, it will only work if they keep up the Munich Loves You campaign. Once the tourists leave, they'll be back to their old ways. But maybe this year's Oktoberfest will be extra friendly... tongue.gif

If anything, they might be a little more ill-tempered by the end of this year than usual, what with TWO major tourist onslaughts instead of just Oktoberfest.

yeah what a travesty indeed to have people want to visit their city eh? Maybe the Munich *hearts* you campaign will eventually be replaced with the more controversial "munich loves you, now f*** off!" campaign. ph34r.gif

It is really getting on my nerves - everyone at work being so jolly when usually all they do is moan and complain !! Germans everywhere being so happy and smiling when normally they are so rude ... this would not bother me except they are really dull/boring/bad-mannered the rest of the year - not to mention stingy !! the other thing that is winding me up is that the town has gone football mad with shops, companies etc.. putting football logos all over just so they can get more customers/money - well this i do not mind so much as hopefully it will improve the economy and better things over here -- Happy Germans would not be at all bad if they were like this the rest of the year as well !!!

I agree completely - it's just not real. And why does the chemist's shop, and the optician, and ... you name it ... have to have their window display full of footballs? Why?? Why??? Is that going to make me buy more spectacles, or medicine, or whatever? As for the smiling etc, I think it's a typical thing here - it's a big special event that gets them all stirred up and sends them into happy-smiley mode for a while, until reality takes over and they come back down to earth with a crash.

I don't have a problem with the longer opening hours, though. biggrin.gif
