I am invited over to a friend's house tomorrow and am pondering if I should risk driving. I will have to take the Mittlere Ring a good ways and am a bit concerned that it will get REALLY crowded in the early afternoon. Fanfest opens at 1pm, stadium opens at 2pm, and opening ceremony starts just before 5... Do folks think if I leave by 3:00 things will still be ok?

public transport??? always a winner...
I live by the Mittler Ring- and its backed up every friday, nothing to do with the Football... so, either leave very early, or very late... but afternoon to early evening will be hell.

No matter where you live, you could avoid the mittler ring. I drive about 40K km a year and dont often get snagged up in traffic.
Where are you travelling to and from? Give us a clue.
I will be travelling from Moosach to
Trudering. I can take public but will have to change 2x or 3X and it will take me over an hour -- always takes a bit longer with the baby carriage because I prefer to use the elevator. But if the MR will be hell it might not take longer anyway and at least I can read if my daughter doesn't fuss too much...
Will public transport also be a problem with a baby carriage in the afternoon, given the WC? I would be on U5 to hbf than U1 + buses
edit--please don#t suggest a route involving the Autobahn -- am too chicken to drive on it

Moosach to Trudering... And you are going to use the Mittler ring!!!
Head north and find the A99.. Follow towards Salzburg and Exit at Haar.. Trudering is 6minutes from Haar.
Should only take 20 minutes..Oh deary deary me! you will fight the Mittler ring but wont try the autobahn.
Maybe you should take your driving test here!
G, I know, I should learn to love the Autobahn..would certainly never have passed the DE driving test, I am just lucky that I was able to trade in my American drivers' license for a German one (can't do that with all states in the US weirdly enough).
AND even more appalling I can't really drive a manual transmission!

how about following the mittler ring but heading south round Munich over luisekiesselbachplatz, brudermühlstr and ramersdorf?
I work in Laim and used to live in
Trudering, I often drove that way home if there was something on at the
olympiapark.
Okay its a longer route but your heading in the opposite direction to the rest of the traffic...

all considering wouldnt it be easier just to take the public transport?? if the ring is chocker you'll be sitting on it for over 30 mins anyways.

zard, I'm sure going to try not to be anywhere near the
Hauptbahnhof with my stroller on any game days in Munich.
But you won't be on any trains heading north, so maybe the S-Bahn/U-Bahn will be OK, even if the station is packed.

I get to battle traffic from Leuchtenberg-unterführung over Effnerplatz and the jfk bridge to
schwabing tomorrow afternoon. Should be fun..

My son's kiga is closed tomorrow because of the dangers to kids going and coming from school. That should tell you something right there! Call in sick and stay home!
I think that is alittle extreme!

There are loads of people in
Marienplatz now. Fantastic atmosphere there!

Neither my son's kindergarten nor my other son's school hort is closed, and I have two meetings planned at work. I think you have some soccer fans running your kid's kindergarden.

The kiga is only a stones throw from the stadium and many kids have to pass through the
Kieferngarten Ubahn station. I think it is quite prudent of them to do on this clusterfuck of a day that will be tomorrow.

I will have to battle the Mittlere Ring every day. You would be mad to try and drive that way from Moosach to
Trudering. Because of the road works from Effnerplatz along Richard-Strauss-Strasse the traffic backs up to the "Tucherpark" turn-off at the best of times. Add increased traffic and it will be mayhem.
Grinner's suggested route might normally be better but i have a feeling that traffic to the stadium might also congest that route, at least until you get past the stadium turn-off.
Public transport is propbably best, though you should expect many more people travelling on that as well.

It doesnt matter if you take public trans or drive. The entire city transportation will be totally fooked. Esp the Stammstrekke,Marienplatz and the U3\U6 lines... Anywho goodluck

Traffic is going to be BUSY tomorrow. Beckstein's little green elves are asking anyone who doesn't HAVE to drive their car not to. Public transport will be a lot busier than usual (especially U2, U3, U6 and you should avoid them unless you need to) but better than car.
I'd take the
S-Bahn from Moosach and change onto the
Trudering line at Laim or Rosenheimer Platz.
Ok, so basically the consensus is that traffic WILL get bad on the Mittlere Ring today. How soon?? Do you think if I leave
Trudering at 2pm it will already be hellish? I am still trying to decide if I should go at all!

roads emptier than usual this morning. Thanks all for taking the U-Bahn!

Traffic on the ring (
Schwabing - Effnerplatz and Leuchtenberg) worse than normal, but not too much. However, tons of free parking at the office today.
Moosach S-bahn stop only has stairs--not baby-carriage friendly! Could trying going to Fasanerie, but still a hassle changing at HBF. And then would have to take a bus in
Trudering.

take the car, sounds like you want to. You'll be ok. You can always listen to the radio

OK, will someone please explain to me why the traffic today will be any worse than traffic on any other day that there is a game at the Alliance Arena? It's the same number of people, right? Plus, I think, with more tourists, more people will take public transportation than drive.
What is the big panic about?
boomtown_rat

possibly due to the fanfest at Olympia park but I'm basically with you kk64
Ok, I am wimping out and not going! Another friend is going who has to drive part of the same route, and she will probably tell me later that traffic wasn't bad at all, but I need to get some things done today anyway (will be gone all weekend), so I've decided to reduce my stress level and just stay home this time.
KK, what other posters said about the MR is that traffic blocks up there even when its not that heavy, due to the construction, and that Friday afternoons are ALWAYS bad. I think between fans going to the stadium and folks going to the Fanfest at the
Olympic Park we can assume there will be a bit more traffic than usual--and with the construction that probably means it will be slow.
You have to understand, getting stuck in traffic by yourself is annoying, getting stuck in traffic with a 1-year old trapped in her car seat can be much worse, if she loses her pacifier and is hungry/tired/has a full diaper!

zard, probably an intelligent choice.
And the other drivers can be grateful, because you have thereby guaranteed a smooth drive for them on the Mittlerer Ring today! (Whereas if you had gone, it would have been hell.)

Moosach must be one of the few statoins that isn't pushchair / wheelchair friendly but that ill be fixed as part of the U3 extension I guess. Having had a think about it, I'd say Rosenheimer Platz would have been the best station to change between the 2
S-Bahn lines.
The reason the traffic (road and
MVV) will be heavier than a normal game is:
The people coming are coming from lots of different places and directions and may not know the way so well.
All the Fan Park people are EXTRA and that's ANOTHER 20 thousand PLUS people who are moving aroud town to the pubs etc. PLUS the usual Friday exodous.

Vindicated! My friend called from her cell phonea little while ago and said the MR was already hellish and she is turning around and going home (she has a 1-year old in a car seat too!)... if its bad at 11, I'm sure it will be much worse in the afternoon...

The radio has issued a warning for the streets listed in the message; avoid them from app. 2pm - 3.30pm if possible (and of course after the game).
