The threat terrorism

I was going through topic "Remembering 7th July 2005 in London, Terrorism comes home" and I remembered of my friend who was saying the other day that the World Cup was an obvious terrorist ph34r.gif target.

That made me think may be it could come to Munich too and if yes is munich really secure/prepare against it? Are you aware of any initiatives taken by german authorities to prevent such indiscriminate attacks???
egaston
I asked myself that same question. I want to enjoy all the festivities, but since I'm new here in Munich, (only for a month) I don't really have many people to go watch the games @ Olympia Park. I have read about some attacks in Berlin (more racial then terriost) and being a female with darker skin then most Americans (Mexican) I'm a little unsure about just popping up at one of these things. At the same time, I don't want fear to keep me at home and ruin this possible awesome time.
MonksTown
Well "indescriminate" attacks isn't really right.
The countries attacked by Ay-rabs tend to be the ones with the tendency to drop bombs on people for oil.

Obviously with England, the USA and Australia taking part in the World Cup it could be argued that they could be "targets". But it is more of a tabloid scare mongerer than any concrete threat IF we beleive what the spooks tell us...

There WILL be strict controls on people entering the Olympia Park and the Stadium area in Munich.
I expect the security not to be so trigger happy as Plod in the UK but efficient.

There IS racism in Munich and there SOME people have experienced racist attacks in Munich from name calling to attempted murder but MUCH MUCH MUCH less than in Berlin and the eastern states.

Ironically when London was hit on July 7, much of the media had actually been talking about the potential for Edinburgh to be a target because of the G8

Munich/Germany is as safe as it can be for the WC. Which doesn't mean it's safe.
small_beast
I am not really aware of or atleast read about the new mechanisms they are going to deploy to make the public transport safer!!!

Three words...

Ubahn

Suitcase

Boom.

and there is no way to stop it other than shooting catching them before the act.
Showem
Terrorism is just that: spreading of terror. If you are scared to live your daily life due to fear of getting blown up, they've already won.
small_beast
Even to catch them after the act the security should be deployed more INTELIGENTLY ...i mean where ever they have video cameras they cry out loud "SIE SIND HIER VIDEO UEBERWACHT" biggrin.gif
christine_4none
This is SCARY!
UrbanAngel
Of course it's an obvious target, as is any other gathering of a huge amount of people, or 'important' people.

Watcha gonna do about it?

Well with 40k cops and 2k Military scattered throughout The city, Public Trans network, and the Stadium
I think they got it covered..
the Boy From Bozlem
Is that 40k + 2k in Munich alone?

Would they be able to check every single person getting on to any Ubahn, Sbahn, Bus or driving a car in munich?

Me doubts it.

Apparently there is no mobile phone access at the airports though networks appear as available, but can't be connected to. Carm said there was no mobile phone network access at Munich Airport this morning, and now there is none at FFM - for her or anyone else she saw.
coolerking
i know that all police leave is cancelled so they can't do more except bring the army in as well
DDBug
My colleague in London told me today (about 11ish) that they had just reported on the first incidence of vandalism related to the world cup - english fans vandalized the taxi that was taking them from the airport to the hotel. Should be fun when that lot hits marienplatz dry.gif
Edit - not English fans in general, I mean the igits who vandalized the taxi.
MonksTown
Should bring in the ultimate weapon: A grumpy bitter German granny who can use her "walking stick" as a weapon against all the "Kanacken". dry.gif

laugh.gif my mother in law is at the beergarden in harlaching already

ph34r.gif I hope Mr DDBug doesn't read this.

Thats what the papers are reporting, from their interviews with Beckstein
