Hi everyone,
I was most excited to hear about there being a Ben and Jerry's retailer in Munich! Here's the deal :
Ben 'n Jerry's im Flughafen München
Adresse: Am "Airbräu", zwischen Terminal 1 und 2
Fresh Bagels & Muffins Coffee Shop
Adresse: Barerstraße 72, 80799 München-Schwabing
On the same thread - there's actually a Haagen-Dazs cafe in Munich too :
Leopoldstr. 19
80802 München
Tel.: +49 (0)89 38 88 72 78
Not been to these places yet. Also it's probably not new information, just new for me.
If any Americans are reading this, there's also a grocery store on Baaderstrasse (corner Fraunhoferstrasse / on top of the U-Bahn exit) run by Karl who's fluent in German and American :
Schmankerlnische Dreyfus Francesco
Baaderstr. 65, 80469 München
(089) 2017031, (089) 20239342
He has all kinds of American things like Pam (some kind of butter spray - ugh!) and cake packets, icing (i think you call it 'frosting'?), drinks like root beer, chocolates, sweets, all kinds of stuff plus fresh muffins, brownies, bagels ...

Did you say root beer?!? I've heard many rumors about root beer in Munich, some on this site, and they have all proved groundless. THAT is worth making a special trip for.
As for icing (we call it icing too, more often, I'd say, than frosting), brownies, cakes and pam, they seem to be the standard "American" food in Munich shops for some reason. One thing I'll never understand is why they seem to think that jars of marshmallow fluff are some kind of traditional American food, just because that's where they come from...

Theres a new hagen daaz cafe just opened on Tal as well, just as you get off marianeplatz.

Oops I forgot to mention that Karl's shop, Schmankerl Nische, also has Ben and Jerry's!
Also, it doesn't just have that typical sweet stuff like marshmallows, it has other stuff too, but I have a huge sweet tooth, so that's the stuff that catches my eye every time I go in there
The root beer is A&W I think, or some random letters...
Thanks for the tip about the Tal cafe! Will look into it ASAP mmm

After this Cherry Garcia has settled down...

Oh Urban Angel, you're killing me with the Ben 'n Jerry's references. Having grown up in Vermont and experienced the original Ben and Jerry's(corner of Church Street in Burlington VT), I've been waiting for it for so long. I hope they have my favorite, New York Super Fudge Chunk!!! Yum, yum.

I think I saw Ben & Jerry's in a supermarket somewhere in Munich, and can't remember where. Does anyone know if there is a supermarket that carries it as well?
not sure, but I think Walmart should have it.

There is a Ben & Jerry's stand in Hbf on the 1st underground level right by the entrance to the S-Bahn. Not sure if it is usually there but it was as of 1100 today.
Mmm, Phish Food - my favorite ice cream and my favorite band! Not sure if they've ever had that in large volumes though. I think they just sell pints of it.
There's a small Ben & Jerry's supplier downstairs from my flat on the corner of Barerstrasse and Theriesenstrasse. They also have a W-LAN, coffee, smoothies, and various munchies... It's probably one of my fav hangout spots in town.

For basically my entire life I thought Häagen-Dazs was Swedish or Danish or something. I had to move here to learn that it is actually American. Weird.
"Reuben Mattus, a young entrepreneur with a passion for quality and a vision for creating the finest ice cream, worked in his mother's ice cream business selling fruit ice and ice cream pops from a horse drawn wagon in the bustling streets of the Bronx, New York. To produce the finest ice cream available, he insisted on using only the finest, purest ingredients.
The family business grew and prospered throughout the 1930's, 40's and 50's, and by 1961 Mr. Mattus decided to form a new company dedicated to his ice cream vision. He called his new brand Häagen-Dazs, to convey an aura of the old-world traditions and craftsmanship to which he remained dedicated."
The question remains; does Häagen-Dazs actually mean anything?

The Haagen-Dazs story, as I was told in one of my classes in college, was that during the ... '70s (?) there was a really big health and fitness trend going on, and all the ice cream was low fat etc. And these two guys started a small ice-cream shop in new york called haagen daaz, which sold "real" ice-cream. Originally there was a small hand drawn map of Antwerp (I think it was) on top to make it look foreign and traditional. I don't think the name actually means anything.
The funny thing is, the way it began is very much the way Ben & Jerrys started off years later.

Reuben wanted to change the ice cream. In 1959, the ice cream he was working on for a decade was ready for market. It was made strictly from fresh cream, egg yolks, and other superior ingredients. He called it Häagen-Dazs®.
Originally sold only to small gourmet shops in the New York metropolitan area, there was no marketing or advertising push for the new ice cream but over time word of mouth created such an enormous demand for the product. Häagen-Dazs® was the first company to come out with an ice cream sold to coast to coast. It became so popular Reuben was afraid he wouldn't be able to keep up with the demand.

Ben & Jerrys is actualy non-American these days, it was bought by Unilever (e.g. Dutch) a couple of years ago.

But it's still made in the US though, right? I don't think they'd stop producing it Vermont, since that's one of their big marketing points.
Here's the list of all Ben & Jerry's providers in Munich:
http://www.benjerry.de/?scope=shops&sub=show&ort=7
I don't know the details, but I guess it's produced in multiple factories around the world nowadays. Hard to imagine that they would ship the ice from America to stores in Europe. The "Vermon's finest Ice Cream" slogan is just marketing.

You gotta read the
history of B&J. Very funny and these guys are exceptionally cool too:

Chocolate Fudge Brownie !!! That's the one.
One of the cool things these guys used to do, at least, was that the CEO could only earn 9 times that of the lowest paid employee of the company. I'm sure it's changed now that they belong to Unilever.

I had some ben&jerry ice cream when I was in Canada last week, and was really quite disappointed - I found it very bland. Maybe I'd just got my hopes up too much after having heard everyone saying how delicious it was...but my favourite is still Häagen-Dazs.

Ben and Jerry's costs € 5.49 for 500mL at the coffee shop on the corner of Theresienstr. and Barerstr. I picked up the flavour "Half Baked". It's ice cream alright, but it's not one of those "Omigod, I can die happy right now" type of ice creams.

it's at the middle entrance to the s-bahn on the lower level. if you are coming from the train station you can't miss it!

Exactly, there are so many flavours, some more simple than others. Actually, compared to HD, B&J have more variety and are sweeter.

Chocolate Fudge Brownie
*Chunky Monkey
*Cherry Garcia

Phish Food
Caramel Chew Chew

Yes, I would agree that the description sounds bad BEFORE you try it. Now I read that description and crave it
The pretzels in it are darn good ... unfortunately if you ever look at any of the B&J's nutritional labels, even in comparison to other ice creams, then you'll see why it really does turn you into a chubby hubby.

hem, normally when you go out the east entrance of the bahnhof, down to the s-bahns, the stand is right there next to the tchibo croissant stand. maybe they had a day off.
there is also the coffee & muffins shop on barerstr. (68 maybe) and they have a large sortimentof b&j. a pint was EUR 5,35!
i had my fix of cherry garcia on saturday and the girl there asked me, is it also so expensive in the u.s. (i mean EUR 2 for a small cup) and i said, yeah, but it's worth it! also movenpick ice cream cost the same.

forgot to mention this awhile back, but i chatted with the asian girl who runa the stand and she says during the week they/she are/is located at the s-bahn entrance at the train station. on the weekends, they/she are/is located at track 28 of the train station. she says on the weekends there ain't so much going on that they can put their wagon upstairs.
happy lickins!

Yeah, we were there on Friday. Special
Oktoberfest ice cream flavours, beer, radler, chocolate banana, gebrannte mandel and Wiesn Herzen flavours. The beer ice cream was interesting, it tasted like sweet beer foam. The guy said it was made with Hofbräu beer, and it certainly had a malty/hoppy aftertaste. Not for everyone, but worth a go once, just to say you have eaten it. Right on Platzl near the HBhaus.
