Home telephone sockets

How to activate them

Hi,

we've just moved into an old crappy altbau with what looks like the original wiring from 1800's or something.

Anyhow, the place has 3 phone sockets throughout the flat, none near where I have the computer. A couple of problems, perhaps you can help with?...

1) the first socket i tried, the phone wouldn't work. after dialing, i would get a 'beep beep beep' tone. I was about to curse telekom for not turning on the line, when I tried one of the other sockets. That one works fine, and that's where I've also got the DSL modem/WLAN box.

So.. what's the deal with all these sockets and why didn't the first one work. Is that normal?
In addition, with the covers off, you can see that only two small wires are connected, the rest hang free - is that normal?

How can I 'activate' the socket that's playing odd with me?

2) when all is said and done, all the sockets are still too far from my study, and WLAN is crappy. ...

...So, how can I get a new socket installed and activated? Is it expensive? Will the walls need to be torn down? Is the wife gonna kill me, just so I can download Lost!!!?

So many questions... got any answers?!

When I arrived in Munich I was told that Telekom normally only activate one phone slot in your flat. Something to do with privacy or something. It didn't make sense to me but you know how Germans can be. Apparently your hausmeister should have keys to the cabling cabinet and can connect the others up for you, otherwise you'll need Telekom to do it. Not sure about getting a new socket put in, that's likely to be a question for your landlord too.

This may not be 100% correct, it's just what I heard.

BTW: What speed internet connection do you have? WLAN properly set up is unlikely to be the slowest part of that connection.

Sounds like both These guys and These guys would be able to help you.. smile.gif

cheers. I've got the DSL6000 t-online tariff, and the WLAN has to pass through about 4 or so large rooms - the strength meter is showing around 20 in istumbler, and DSL online tests give results around the 50Kb rate if im lucky... so a real waste of my connection speed. Oh, and the connection keeps dropping - so I'm keen on getting a wired solution.

After some searching, I found this link:

If I read correctly, it's 15 euros per 15 minutes work. So, think i might just get it all done with them.

Any other tips before I place the order?!

hmm.. just read the eventful communications blurb. Sounds interesting.

Would they do the same work, as if I were contacting Telekom direct?
Would their prices be similar?
Any other pros/cons of going with those guys?
Any ex-customers of theirs here?

cheers ;-)

Why don't you just ask them directly for the first 2 questions? smile.gif Get a quote, do some background research.

You are unlikely to find any ex-customers. They stay with us smile.gif
