Thanks Elfenstar! I forgot where I was... Does one need a specific license for insurance sales, or will a general business license do? In other words, do they require special schooling, etc.?

there didn't used to be, but thankfully, there are now.

People who have no idea what they are doing should not be set loose on the general public selling financial products. Regardless how well-meaning. The usual result is financial damage to the clients and often to themselves.

the EU has some sort of regualtion. (surprise, surprise)

Further hurdles may come in the form of your Aufenthaltsgenehmigung - as a non-EU citizen, there very well be a line forbidding self-employment. there was a thread recently here on TT...

The IHK has series of qualifications, the lowest of which is called the Fachberater/-in für Finanzdienstleistungen.

Lots of companies are always looking for sales help. Some of them are even honest, serious companies.
Many of them may offer you training - on and off the job - incl. preperation for the IHK test. Read the fine print well.

And for god's sake, don't fall for any MLM bulls*it scheme, no matter how good they make it sound, it's about using you and exploiting your personal relationships in an attempt to further someone else's income on the promise of a quick buck.

Thanks, not involved with one of those! You are absolutely right, though. People need to be qualified before being "unleashed" on the public.

Surprising though it may seem, This website suggests that for most levels of insurance agent or salesman, then NO special license, qualification or explicit knowlege is required ("Nachweis von Kenntnissen und Fähigkeiten nicht erforderlich") and that there is no state control or monitoring of your activities. There are rules you need to follow, however, and of course, you need the permit to be able to work self-employed in Germany, which for non-EU citizens is not especially easy. Whether, of course an insurance company would permit you to sell their products without training or knowlege is questionable.
