Life in the Munich Altstadt

Advice on what it's like to live there

Hello!

I will be moving to Munich in the next few months with my wife and 4-month child (as expats), and were hoping to get some advice on a couple of rental options... actually we got back from Munich this evening (Sunday) after spending the whole weekend checking appartments.
In the shortlist we had an apartment in Schwabing and one in Altstadt (next to Salvatorplatz). The latter is much nicer as an apartment and better adjusts to our needs, but we were worried that Altstadt wasn't much of a resident-friendly area. Is it possible to find the basic services there -groceries, laundry, drugstores, healthcare, etc? What about restaurants (non-tourist eateries, that is)?
The app includes a parking place so luckily that is not an issue (whilst the Schwabing app didn't and I suppose this is a problem, specially on Fridays and Saturdays).

Many thanx,
Ferrer

It depends on what part of Schwabing. Parking isn't a problem here at all, but near Leopoldstrasse it might be.

Thanks DDBug for the quick reply. The Schwabing app is on Kunigundenstrasse, close to a street full of bars, shops, and restaurants (I remember seeing a Starbucks).

It will be easy to find all services except for the grocery shopping in the Altstadt. Unless you are willing to pay a slight premium and shop for groceries in the big department stores, which are fairly close by.

If you're living near Salvatorplatz, even the groceries wouldn't be a problem as there's a Minimal in the basement of the fünf höfe.

Ah yes, forgot about that one.

It's a very good one, too, always clean and well stocked, which is not the case of all supermarkets in town.

I'm not too sure about the availability of laundry services... I doubt very much that there are any laundromats along the Marienplatz-Odeonsplatz stretch, and I don't recall seeing any dry-cleaning shops, either. I think you'd be well advised to buy a washing machine if there's no laundry room in the basement of your building, and for dry cleaning you'll probably have to look a bit further afield. (Mind you, in my experience finding a good dry cleaner is difficult in other neighbourhoods as well.)

Karlsplatz has a cleaners in the underground part.

parking near kunigundenstr. might be a bit of a challenge.

I would rather go for the downtown flat.

Both sound like nice options but I'd go for Salvatorplatz. The MiniMal is a nice grocery store, lots of nice restaurants nearby, walking distance to all kinds of interesting places including the Viktualienmarkt, and best of all, close to the Hofgarten and the entrance to the English gardens.
