Celle - Lower Saxony

Meeting other English speakers there
barneyjax
Hi there,

I'm new to Celle and to this board! Just wanted to say Hallo!
tom_a
Celle is a nice place. But my gut feeling is that noone on this board lives anywhere close to it.

Hi, barneyjax, welcome to the madness.

...well, I do ...hence the name.
Eleanor Rigby
Interesting, never heard of the place.

How would you pronounce it?

Chelle or Selle or Kelle?

Is it pronounced the same in English and German?
bluedave
Jenny L used to live in Saxony out in the sticks, she might know of it maybe. huh.gif
Jenny L
Tselle. But do you mean Celle as in Niedersachsen? That's not exactly near Sachsen though.
Eleanor Rigby
Thanks Jenny.
Jenny L
Yo. Anytime. biggrin.gif

Hallo,

Celle´s north east of Hannover. We´ve got friends living on a new estate in Westercelle. It´s a beautiful town. Have you visited the castle yet? I´m also new to the board, but live since ´97 in Hannover, before that I was in Stuttgart. North-south - quite a contrast!

ps: Celle is definitely in Niedersachsen!

If any native English-speaker has problems finding other English people in and around Celle, I'll eat my hat.

Craupaud...or anyone else who might know...What is the real estate market doing in Celle these days? Please don't tell me the cost of homes has doubled in the past 5 years. Any idea how much a large house (4 bedroom, 2 bath, 2 living areas if possible) might cost?

Any suggestions about where in Celle would be the best area to live for a good primary school?

Cost of housing in Germany has not gone up like it has in Australia. If you want to look for houses, check out www.immoscout.de. I would seriously consider renting and not buying. Coming from Australia, its drilled into you from the time you're born that renting is throwing away money, and you should always buy, but in almost all cases, its cheaper to rent than pay interest on your loan in Germany.
Hutcho
Man, I just looked up Celle on immoscout, and its super freaking cheap there. You can get a beautiful 6 room (so probably 4 bedroom) house for the same amount I pay for my 2 bedroom apartment in Munich (€1050 warm a month).. given the amount you say you'll be earning from the other thread, you'll be pretty well off in this part of Germany.. check out Scout-Objekt-ID: 41621244 for example. That would cost you easily 3 times as much in Munich. Looks like a pretty town too.

To back up my "you should consider renting" statement.. check out how much similar houses cost to buy - around €300,000 + 10% fees. Do the math on that, and you'll see its cheaper to rent..

My first time to Germany was to Celle on 'business' back in 2000 or 2001. Very pretty town and would love to revisit sometime. There's obviously thousands of English speakers there due to the British Army barracks though I'm pretty sure none frequent this site. Enjoy!

I also live on the outskirts of Celle. Yes, there are loads of Army personal to be found in Celle, but they pretty much keep to themselves.

To give an example I rent a flat in Offen just south of Bergen living room, 4 bedrooms and 2 multi-purpose rooms, bathroom and kitchen for 540€ warm biggrin.gif cant complain at all. OK it is a village but only 3km from Bergen so no real problem, if you want a really cheap flat look outside the towns a little. Also a good mix of German and British due to the hangers on'ers from the Army.

Yes, property is certainly cheaper than Munich. I recently bought a 3 room flat (73m²) for €60K in Neuenhäusen in Celle. Officially it is mine, but really it belongs to the bank.

Celle is a nice town, I have lived here for nearly 20 years. There are quite a few, who like me, met and married local girls during their stay here with the forces, but there isn't really an organised Stammtisch.

We have a 4 bedroom House in Ovelgönne with 120m² living space, 60m² of Celler and 1000m² of Garden for a Mounthly Morgage of 670€ and we are only 10mins away from Celle and 20mins from Hannover (house is for sale if anyones interested)

Hi,

I'm new to Celle and am wondering if there are any English speakers meet ups / groups in the area?

The only regular meetups in the general vicinity that I know of are in Hannover. Our meetup group has a website which lists a number of those:

http://www.hannover4englishspeakers.de/

There are a few TT members in Celle, though. Check out the TT nifty-keen member map here:

http://www.toytowngermany.com/xtra/maps/members.html

Click on the balloon thingie for Celle and you'll see the members' names.
