We decided to check out the church in Diessen yesterday as had heard it was beautiful and happened upon their annual Töpfermarkt. This reminded me of an American art-fair (anyone ever been to Ann Arbor Art Fair?), except all of the exhibitors were displaying pottery or various types of ceramics. The quality was uniformly excellent -- really beautiful stuff. Its right on the lake so most of the streets down to the lake are blocked off.

In addition the main show on the lake, there is some sort of ceramics trail through town and also some exhibits of award-winning ceramics.

We got there right at 10 and the place was packed by 11. There didn't seem to be any admission charge.

Therewere a couple of big parking lots set up on the outskirts of town with bus service to the fair -- looked like the fee as 3.50 . Apparently they also have extra boats running across the lake from Herrsching. We went to Herrsching later in the day and the place was deserted except for the big line for the boat!

ps -- We did make it to the church as well -- the Marienmünster is truly stunning.

Here are a few pictures we took yesterday at the Töpfermarkt.

How nice of you to include the pictures! The work looks original and very fine. I've always wondered about this market and you've given me the incentive to visit it next year. Thanks for this post!

This event is now on again for 2007 until Sunday inclusive. Although todays weather was against us, this is a fantastic place to browse/buy at comparitively cheap prices. Much of the ceramic ware / pottery is of a very high standard.

It is worth travelling via Herrsching (s-bahn) and taking the boat (www.seenschifffahrt.de) - one of the boats used is a century old paddle boat, recently restored.
