Does anyone have a suggestion for a book or books that cover the essential, or at least useful, skills for dealing with unexpected situations that may arise in all mountain sports such as walking, trekking and back country skiing.
What the ideal book(s) would cover are the essential items to take with you, tips on orientation and navigation, mountain weather, what to do if you get lost, first aid techniques and diagnosis of problems, effects on the body of typical mountain problems like heat exhaustion or extreme cold, keeping warm in winter and cool in summer, how to survive nights in the open, how to find clean water/things to eat etc. Preferably the books should be in English but if there's an exceptional German language title I could plough through it. There are many topics and many, like avalance risk assessment, are so large they're worth covering separately but most of the above are more general.
Thanks in advance.

I have a basic hill-walking/climbing first-aid book which covers most of the areas you mentioned. I'll post the name tomorrow.

The Bible for the UK is
Mountaincraft and Leadership, which covers navigation, campcraft, mountain weather, hypothermia, first aid, mountain rescue, party leadership, techniques on snow and ice, snow and avalanches, and cold injury. It is specific to the hills in Britain, so wouldn't necessarily be fully relevant to the Alps (and doesn't cover skiing), but it is an excellent guide nonetheless.

Yes, I agree with "Mountaincraft and Leadership" by Eric Langmuir.
An excellent and pretty comprehensive guide.
I do have a second book to complement that one, it is:
Emergency Medical Procedures for the Outdoors
Mine is a very old copy, but maybe it has been updated.
My ISBN is 0-89732-051-4

Thanks everyone, I ordered both books. If you think of any more, especially about the special challenges of the bigger mountains in Germany & Austria (the British hills are much smaller), or winter alpine techniques then do let me know.

The first aid book I have is "First aid for Hillwalkers & Climbers" ISBN 0-902363-45-X. I find it good but you should really do a good course, the books are best as a refresher.
The best navigation book I have is in German, by Wolfgang Linke, "Orientierung mit Karte, Kompaß, GPS", ISBN 3-512-03155-2. It's excellent in the practical examples but you need good German. Tip s on which compass, map, GPS receiver to buy for your needs, how to use them correctly, emergency navigation etc.
