Hi there,
I went to see my friendly DKV health insurance guy here in lueneburg and got a quote for some private health insurance which came out at €156.52 a month plus €17.87 for pflegevenrs, which would cover me for the doctor dentist hospital blah blah, but i have to pay €340 worth of seeing the doc etc before they start to pay anything.
so i was just wondering how much it costs to go to see the Quack anyway & if this is about normal?
all the germans i've asked think it sounds quite a lot but they have mostly been students so have no idea really!
cheers in advance!

I pay a little more, but my deductible per year is 250 and I got some first class benefits- world travel coverage, helicopter emergency to Munich, good dental set up (Like I need that), Homeopathic and all that. So yours seems reasonable.

If that 156 is the total amount, of which you would have to pay half (employer paying the other half) then that doesn't sounds like too bad a deal.

guess your question was about the cost for the initial check up, not the monthly cost of being covered, right?
sounds a lot to me. what you can do is shop around a bit. why not take the list of requirements (i.e. what exactly needs to be checked) to more than one doctor? in my experience prices vary a lot when you pay cash - with no insurance to report to some doctores know no shame.

I wish no I'll be paying the lot as i'm self employed.
It was more to see how many visits it would take to the doc before i had paid the €340 & they (DKV) start paying instead!
I guess its a bit of a tricky one as it depend s on what is wrong when you go to the doc but never having been in germany for anything i have no idea

If you are self employed there is no reason that you have to pick expensive German insurance.
You can get expat insurance for much less, and it covers basically the same stuff. I had a policy from www.expatriatehealthcare.com, which cost 600 pounds per year and had no excess. Anytime I have had to claim, its all been fine.

yes it is normal for them to request a doctors examination if you were not previously in the German system, the cost of the check over varies from about 25€ to 50€ but doctors here do a prices guide book to check if they are not sure.

I paid 60 EUR for check-up before I got insured.
The price for Bereitschafts behandlung was also aprox 60 (including injections they gave me), which I found not bad, but on the other hand, paid 40 EUR for antibiotics.
