mtb = mountain bike I would guess, and yes it is legal as long as no one sits in the back, as far as I know

I think you are allowed to do this for a period of 3 days max from the time the seats are taken out, if driving within the EU and using Autobahns. if you choose to use only country roads (where the speed limits are defined) you can use the aforementioned car for 5 days max.
please notify the authorities when you plan to do this and submit for Deutscheregel XVII-B, please take photographic evidence, camera should be the one where the date and time stamp is clearly visible. submit form in triplicate.
Note: this rule applies to all other detachable parts in the car except wheels!

@arshoo: You forgot the spare tire.
Also, bikes in the car are only allowed if you tie the intestines of a young goat born during the 25th of Nov. - 13th of Dec. the year before onto your bonnet. You can get the application form for the goat at the "Veterinäramt" Thalkirchner Str. 106, 80337 München. Apply as early as possible, since they run out of goats quite fast during summertime.

@Helterskelter
Search before you post, goats can't be born on the 25th of November in Germany. From 20th to the 28th of November is the Goatenverboten festival.

If anyone stops you just refer them to the Bulle von Tölz who drives around without a front seat, so it must be legal for cops at least.
Also, avoid interefering with the wiring for the car radio as this can lead to the inadvertent transmission of van aerial disease.
