Exhibition: Ort und Erinnerung - Munich

Pinakothek der Moderne - until 28.May.2006

There is a photo/documentary type exhibition in the Pinakothek de Moderne at the moment titled "Ort und Erinnerung - Sites of National Socialist Past in Munich". I went on Sunday for a quick look and it's very impressive. There are lots of images of life for normal Bavarians in the run up to the war, and a huge amount of information in the accompanying text (all German). Loden-frey making uniforms, the BMW factory, the plans for the new Hauptbahnhof, the synagogue before and after destruction, all sorts. There is also archive video footage of various events, including some very harrowing scenes from Dachau.

Attached to the exhibit is a gallery of well over a hundred locations in Munich which still show some relics of the past, arranged by district. The topic's been discussed on TT before, but there are far more locations illustrated in the gallery.

It's running until 28.05.2006 on the ground floor of the Pinakothek de Moderne, and details are available here. If you want to save some cash head over on a Sunday when entry is only a euro. The catalogue for the exhibit is a bit steep at 24E, but contains all the photos, maps and text

Check out the information signs, which are part of the same project, around the streets of Munich. Odeonsplatz, Konigsplatz etc.
These signs, and the exhibition will be gone on the 28th. of May.

Sounds interesting. How much is it on a Friday, for example? Sunday could be a bit busy. Couldn't find the price on the website.

Regular admission is 9,50 euro (that is, admission any day other than Sunday.)

Sunday was a bit busy, it's true. I had no problems seeing everything I wanted to see though.

I went on Sunday a few weeks ago and could not make my way through the crowds at the Ort und Erinnerung exhibition. It's a good thing, I guess.

Warning, the crowds usually get worse towards the end of an exhibition, when people realize it's something they must see that they haven't gotten round to yet.

Cheers guys. €20 for 2 is a bit of a difference to €2 for 2! Hmmm...crowds and extra beer money or no crowds and less beer...

Sounds interesting. Seems that it opens at 10 on sunday, so I think I'll try to head over for when it opens to avoid the crowds and snag the sweet prices. If anyone else plans to go PM me and we can meet up.

I tried to go yesterday but the whole museum was closed for "technical reasons" - anyone know if it'll be open at the weekend?

I really want to go see this tomorrow, I hope it's open

I went to check this out when it opened at 10 on sunday, and the crowds weren't a problem -- the problem was that there were no translations! The pictures were interesting: for example they showed some pics from Dachau, and what Odeonsplatz used to look like, and what Kaufingerstrasse and Stachus used to look like pre-war. They also had a section on then and now pictures, in case you had read up about a particular location and want to go back and visit it now.

It was interesting, but I had gone out the night before, so i could have really used the sleep..

Thank you so much for this! I went on Saturday and ran into a tour group (from the pinakothek) which I followed around and it was super interesting. He also took us outside and we walked around the neighborhood where he showed us buildings Hitler had built and where his office was etc. It was awesome.

The Neue Pinakothek is closed due to a technical default, not the Pinakothek der Moderne.
