Hey,
there are a few slightly famous faces this year amongst the Eurovision hopefuls.
Big Northern Irish poof Brian Kennedy is singing for Ireland a song with the truly memorable title "Every Song is a Cry for Love" so probably the Irish don't actually want to win. In any case, they have to go through today's qualifying round.
Kate Ryan, who sang Eurodisco hits such as "Désenchantée" and "Libertine", will be singing for France. Germany is represented by Texas Lightning, a Country & Western band fronted by an Australian. The British entry is a Northern Monkey rap effort (we also don't want to win).
Finland is the fun entry - Lordi doing something glam death metally.

Cultural highlight of the year obviously! cool.gif
Plenty of local pubs showing it live.

Royaume Uni, Douze Points!

UK singer is called is called "Daz" isn't he? I think he's a mate of a mate of a mate from Stockport.
Note to the blokes ---> Backing singers in school girly uniforms apparently.

Maybe the UK doesn't want to win but they MUST beat the Germans.
I'll be in the pub with a load of sausage munchers and couldn't take the Germans coming on top of us.

Was listening to Terry broadcasting from Athens this morning - made me smile smile.gif I can't imagine the competiton being much fun without his witty banter.

I think I'll just stick with Ted and Dougal actually.

If the arc shows this toss with sound, I will not be there that night

Im not sure if they still do this but when you used to put subtitles on cefax it used to give you the English translation of the song lyrics.

Quite funny sometimes as they looked like they had been done on google

Yea yea yea im a smile.
My mother is a kitchen.
All square and cardboard.
Yea yea yea im a smile.
and the dogs in the attic.

(made up cefax translation type song lyrics)

Just watch this shit. They all sucked, but the least suckiest were the guys from Lithuania and the monsters from Finland. Sure the girls from Bellarus and Macedonia were hot, but they all sucked and the girl from Iceland made it pretty clear that everyone is waiting for the next ABBA. Hell, even Sweden put in a ringer to try to win, but even she sucked. This is the biggest waste of time since Deutschland searches for the next super sucker. I can't believe there is more of this shit to come and a party to boot. rolleyes.gif

Jesus have you NO culture?
This is one of the highlights of the European calendar!

Saturday will be "better". Get ye to a pub with a telly - Slag off the bad clothes, ogle the pretty boys / deep cleavaged lasses, drink loads of pints and say in a dodgy French accent: " l'Allegemagne, null points" cool.gif

You'll be awfully lonely then. laugh.gif
jml
Its lonely at the top. Even the top of the bottom, or the bottom of the bottom. Whatever. Go Texas Lightning, I've never heard your music but how could a fake Texas country western band playing for Germany in Greece at Europe's cheesiest music competition go wrong? Seriously. Come on now, who wants to 2 step? Yippee Kai Yay Y'all. laugh.gif

@Arancina - You'll just have to sing for Italy during the commercials biggrin.gif
kathie
I absolutely love Eurovision and it's on BBC Prime so I shall be revelling in Terry Wogans sarkiness and lapping up the pure cheese biggrin.gif
BadDoggie
Agree that Finland will be the fun entry of the night, but Lithuania? Thanks to Youtube, I saw that their preliminary entry was a less polished version of Icenland's. The girl from Iceland, Sylvía Nótt, is a character. It's a giant joke that no one got but to be fair, it took most of Iceland about six months to realise it. Sylvía Nótt is a character played by gústa Eva and you can read a bit more about her and the response in Iceland over here. She really shouldn't have pissed off the sound man.

I'm going to miss Eurovision again this year. Could someone tape it for me please? Preferably with Wogan commentary but beggars can't be choosers and the lame German version would suffice.

woof.
kathie
I'm with you on the german entry jml! I haven't been able to get the thing out of my head all week!!!
BD - If I manage to get my video recorder attatched to the digital receiver by this evening, you're on!

To be fair, when I made that comment I had just watched the crap the other night and they said that Germany was out. Now, I don't know how Germany is suddenly back in because I thought that they narrowed it down to 10. Suddenly, there are 24 and Germany is again in?
It is going to be a tough choice: American Idol versus Eurotrash? Go Taylor Hicks!.!.!.!.! wink.gif

I'm not stupid enough to get conned into watching this tosh two years in a row (thanks for last year Topsy dry.gif ), but my heart is with Finland. Just seen the video on BBC. I hope they stuff it up the arse of the rest of the ponces and win it.
Joliet Jake
OK, well I'm sitting at home and will subject myself to this crap.

We've already seen the horrid opening number and the hosts "flying in". It can only go down from here.
Joliet Jake
@IW -- thanks so much for the BBC2 link. After 5 minutes, I'm already convinced that this commentary will prove to be the highlight of the show.
jml
crap, crap, crap. I am on my way to a stuffed shirt thing and can't watch it. If I click that link I will never get out of here and am late as it is. Please tell me its sooo bad its good. Anyway Joliet Jake, take notes so you can do a repeat of Texas Lightning for me at the Arc. biggrin.gif
PES
This is what I am watching... Pedro shutting down the Yankees tongue.gif.
Joliet Jake
What the hell was that from Latvia???

Four down and so far I'll back Israel, led by the kid born in Chicago.
Joliet Jake
Norway has obviously been studying old Robert Palmer videos, deciding to go with the look-alike blondes in white instead of the brunettes in black.
garibaldi
Say what you like about Latvia's venture into Meredith Monk/Bobby McFerrin arty acappella territory but at least they were all in TUNE unlike that series of unique microtones Malta has just spewed in our direction!
garibaldi
Germany's entry with Jayne Comerford, the Singing Blancmange. Great bra.
Joliet Jake
Germany just finished and all I can say is YEEEE-HAWW!! @jml - You'll have to belt out that one at the Arc next time since they had a female singer.
Joliet Jake
@garibaldi -- It is, of course, really the Eurovision Bra Contest.
crusoe
Denmark singer's costume harks back to the great days of Abba - gold lame pedal pushers. Oh yeah, she sings too. Not bad either. Eh Jake?
crusoe
If that fresh-faced tasty lad from Russia wiggles his hips any more his trews will fall down.
Edit: Garibaldi next to me comments "Shame about the mullet, and he's a bollocks anyway". It's so nice to have informed, in-depth comments of this quality.
crusoe
Macedonia's singer: "I can make your weeshes come trrrue". If she really meant it, she'd bloody well sing in tune. The monitor engineer must have gone to sleep (again).
garibaldi
So far only the German entry is of any use.
Why are all the men so thick, pig ugly this year?
The TV show backdrops and presentation are also very cheap.
Oh, the the bras look cheap too!
