Hip replacement costs in Germany

Just asking out of curiousity if anyone has an idea what a hip replacement costs in Germany? It's a shot in the dark, but the board has come through for me with other obscure requests, so I figured why not ask.

try the Alpha Klinic web page, or there is a good hip Clinic in Garmish- they might have more things like cost listed on the web page.

I don't think Alpha Klinik do hip replacements - they specialise in knee and spine surgery - and, just looking at their web site now, looks like they have also started treating shoulders.
That reminds me, there's a thread on the Alpha Klinik that I want post to sometime when I have a few spare moments. Basically, not all doctors would recommend them, and they charge exorbitant fees which might not be covered even by private insurance.

Green Tea is right, I also already looked at the AK's page and they don't do it. I mean, they might take your money and do it, but they don't specialise in it.

Well, that is the Klinic we deal with the most. smile.gif

Well, that unfortunately doesn't help answer my question. smile.gif

Well, I am just making a guess here based on others - though hip replacement is normally covered by insurance..
about 1000 for the anasthesiologist
about 100-300 per night hospital or klinik stay (depending on where and how long)
surgeon ? 3000 ?
Spare parts ? 500 ? - ok, I don't know if they really charge for this, they did for Thea - 50 bucks for the steel plate and 5 bucks each per screw

Note - the other prices are not referring to my cat. wink.gif

I am enquiring on behalf of someone who doesn't live in Germany and who would be covering the costs themselves most likely. That's why I'm interested in knowing approximately how much it costs. Thanks for your guessimate DDBug, that at least is a number to work on.

That's what I figured wink.gif
From what I hear, a private klinik stay can be cheaper than a proper hospital stay, but the doctors charge more for their fee (I am really taking a half-educated only guess at the doctor's fee here)

Call one of the orthopedic offices and explain, asking for a rough estimate of the surgery costs, because you are looking for someone to come here and get it done.

I recently read this BBC article about hip operations abroad and it quotes £3,900 for a hip operation in France ... I assume medical costs in Germany are comparible.

Private hip replacement

This site quotes a hip replacement in Germany costing £5,000.

hams figure is about right, the Wolfart clinic does do hips but go to the specialist department of Kipping & Scheuerer rather than the Sports clinic which I used. While I was in the Wolfart, there were a few fix jobs on work done at 3. Ordner & Rechts der Isar and those that I saw cared for by K&S seemed happy. As a comparision, my knee (front ACL with transfer) cost around 7500€ (1 week hospital, operation, care, twin bed room, anaesthesia), a hip replacement is about equivalent in terms of hospital stay.
Page 4 & 5 of this PDF show the technique used (in English).

That seems pretty reasonable to me -- I got both hips replaced in the US 11 and 13 years ago and I think my expenses ran over $30000 then (fortunately full paid by my student health insurance), once you include rehab and PT as well as the actual surgery/hospital stay the charges mount up.

It might be worth checking with the bavarian branch of the RheumaLiga, the German equivalent of the Arthritis Foundation in the US. THR is a common surgery for RA (chronische polyarthritis auf Deutsch), so they might have information.

Am hoping if I ever need my hips re-done that my BKK will cover it!

Not all hip replacements are the same in terms of procedure or materials used so take care if asking for quotes to compare like for like. I know someone whose relative fell over and broke a hip here, had the operation done and then found her insurance wasn't going to pay everything becasue she had a more complex operation than she would have had in her home country.

I spoke with an Orthopedic today (she just happened to have an appoinment with me, and spent 7 years doing hip and knee replacements), I asked and she gave a rough estimate of about 7000 for everything- xrays, surgery, hospital stay, general anesthetic and such...

Just remembered that a friend of mine just had hip surgery - she probably won't know the price since her insurance covered it, but she was very excited about the doctor and the fact that she was given a new procedure where they don't actually replace the whole hip, but do sort of a "refurb". Apparently this proceedure is new here and not even considered in the states, but she is absolutely thrilled.
