b) Nobuyoshi Araki (*1940) from Japan, one of the most provocative photographers of our day, has been taking pictures since the late 1960's. He does this daily and obsessively. His works include not only erotic photographs that have brought him international fame but also pictures of flowers, charming features of everyday life, photos of architecture as well as personal images of himself and of his wife Yoko, who died at an early age. Araki claims the world for himself through the medium of photography, a »claim« that has since been published in almost 400 books.
The work »Tokyo Sexteen«, consisting of 28 diptychs, formed the original basis for the 1973 book »Tokyo« which appeared as a small edition but has now long been out of print. In this early work with its strong conceptual focus Araki juxtaposes pairs of pictures that capture street scenes of everyday life in Tokyo, presenting them in such a way as to evoke erotic fantasies. Passers-by taken at busy junctions and city squares are brought together in the same picture - largely by accident. Only occasionally do they gaze into the camera of the photographer. Juxtaposed to these everyday scenes are other pictures presenting the recurring theme of the woman staring at the viewer in erotically laden fantasies.

b) Tillmans has become one of the most prominent and influential photographers to emerge during the 1990's. He profiles the lifestyles of his immediate circle of friends, working collaboratively with his subjects so that they lose their inhibitions in front of the camera. Tillmans produces raw, confessional images yet stays within the traditional genres of portraiture, landscape and still-life. His ability to produce powerful and sometimes shocking images has brought him success in art galleries and mainstream media alike.

Kultfabrik is showing from May 5 till June 11, 2006, a special exhibition entitled "gute aussichten — junge deutsche fotografie 2005/2006" ("bright prospects — young german photography 2005/2006"), a project to promote up-and-coming talent among graduates of German universities, polytechnics and schools of photography. The members of the selection committee include the photographer Andreas Gursky and the art director of Spex magazine, Mario Lombardo.
The spectrum of this year’s selection encompasses the serial photography of the Becher School and multipart photographic works supplemented by films, DVDs and/or books. The themes covered range from the role of words and images in current news reporting, as in Terror Terra Errata by Martin Willner, and surreal takes on the interiors we inhabit, as in Bettina Metzen’s Selbstgespräche mit dem Universum ("Soliloquies with the Universe"), to Claudia Christoffel’s Gaffadream, which perplexes the viewer with a game of visual hide-and-seek, toggling between the visible and the concealed."...
