HR-Fernsehen to close down on Munich DVB-T service

Replaced by 3 new DVB-H channels (what?)

From Monday 22 May, 2006 HR-Fernsehen (Hessischer TV) currently broadcasting on Channel 56 will no longer be available on the terrestrial digital TV (DVB-T) service in the Munich/South Bavarian TV network. Cable and Satellite reception of this channel will not be affected.

The transmission space used for this channel will be replaced by THREE experimental DVB-H channels. DVB-H is a new technology for broadcasting to handheld multimedia devices (about the size of a mobile phone). Ironically there are currently no DVB-H devices available on the open market, only prototypes currently in the hands of a select few testers. DVB-T equipment cannot be used for the reception of DVB-H services, so Munich TV viewers will end up with one channel less in their choice.

... you would think that one experimental channel might be enough for testing, never mind hog a whole bandwidth. anyway, was never a fan of HR Fernsehen, just a pity it's not being replaced with something decent like BBC World or BBC Prime.
