Hello everyone,
I have Freesat and have been happily receiving BBC1, ITV etc for the last few months, and my wife now wants to watch Channel 4 and 5. So I went on ebay and got an Active Free card. It arrived this morning but the digibox keeps saying the card is not inserted corrrectly. I have a Philips DSR 2010 /02 and the viewing card is brand new.
I have tried putting into the box in every way possinble, but still says "Notice 24 - Mute Smart Card". What I may think the problem is, is that the digibox says "Fur Premiere" which make me think it will only accept Premiere cards.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Nick.

Sky cards will only work with a Sky digibox or a receiver with a Dragon cam!

You need to activate the card me old son.
And you'll need to have your sky digibox connected to a UK landline to do that. If you do it from a german landline sky will know you're not in the UK and not activate it. However, you can get around that by using a dailer.

The Guy does not have a Sky Digibox!
That is the problem
A Dialer MAY work.. I have had failures with these too.
He also states that he bought an ACTIVE freesat card..!

Sorry, just saw the digibox bit and missed the für Premiere.
Active card for who's box? Certainly not his.

A Freesat card will work in any Sky digibox, as long as there is no fault on the system!

It was my understanding that a card is "matched" to a box when it is activated.

Not for the FTV channels.. Thats why they get sold on Ebay etc..

Always thought that was a scam. I stand corrected.

I am thinking of buying a freesat box from the uk, getting my brother to activate the smartcard there and sending it all over. Was wondering if a 60 cm dish would work in Cologne - anyone got any tips?

Are you talking about a sky box or a freesat box? A freesat box doesn't have a card slot. 60 cm should be enough in cologne.

If you are buying "
Freesat from Sky" (quick! - it won't be around much longer!) which is currently miles better in terms of material you can receive than the new
Freesat (essentially from BBC) then you will need to have it installed and working (somewhere) to have the card activated. If you take advantage of the £150 offer for supply and installation from Sky then they will want to install it (at a UK address) themselves. Better to get used system (e.g. from
Ebay), and a card from Sky (£20) install it somewhere (even Germany) and have them enable it. You can even get "pre-enabled" "Freesat from Sky" cards on the grey market, most of which are expired Sky cards and work perfectly well. Unfortunately they probably won't work much longer as a card change is imminent, partially as a result of the new Freesat service. But what the hell, the current difference between a digibox with a Freesat from Sky card and one without is Channel five. I was in Cologne last week and saw folks using a 50cm dish with perfectly good reception for BBC and ITV

Cheers.. yeah I just want the good ole beeb. I hear they will broadcast the Formula One next year in HD so the new gen boxes is what I am looking for. Guess I will have
to do some research.

Nick,
Keep it quiet, but at the moment you don't need to contribute to the Murdoch millions to watch Channel 4.
Just select the channel called "8350" on Astra 2.

Get an 80cm(at least) dish and point it at Astra2d 28.2degrees and you will get Freeview(BBC,Itv etc.) I'll tell you for sure when I get around installing mine.

Maybe not everybody are technically up to date. Yes you need a decoder - any digital satellite decoder should do the job. Card not necessary for receiving the BBC or ITV.

Apparently so.
Decoder = device for descrambling transmissions (with or without card)
Receiver = device for receiving transmissions (scrambled or not, but you need the decoder bit for scrambled)

Sorry I used his words

I of course meant digital receiver... or set top box. But anyway a digital receiver does actually decode - how on earth can the television understand MPEG over the scart connection ?

Yes i been a member since 2005 but have only recently been posting in the forum and am not technically upto date atm.

What is there to be "up to date" about? - the technology has barely changed in 9 years, except perhaps that "decoder" is the wrong word - there's nothing (scambled) to decode. Any digital satellite receiver will do along with a correct size (for your area), correctly aligned (28.2 degrees to the east of south) dish. None of this has anything to do with "Freeview" however, which is a trademarked name for digital terrestrial UK TV transmissions and has nothing to so with TV over satellite. But hey, I've only written this about 20 times in this forum in the last 5 years...

My thoughts were more along the lines that after 5 years you would be technically aware enough to use the search function...

I think it should be fair to say that you should take into consideration how many posts a member has, not how long a member has been with us.

It would also be fair to say that searching is the first lesson to learn

That's transcoding, not decoding.

Yep you're right transcoding.
