If it were for me I'd choose between:

Weisses Brauhaus
Wirtshaus Zur Brezn

La Vecchia Masseria is a personal favourite of mine, good food and wine and good atmosphere. Close to Sendlinger Tor too. It get's busy, so best to book.

If you want simple, down-home Bavarian fare I recommend the Bratwurstherzl right off the Viktualienmarkt. Long wooden tables, wooden benches, uneven, creaky wooden floor, low wooden ceilings and the Bratwürstl are roasted right there in the middle of the room. They have a delightful little courtyard for sitting outside as well.

Wildmoser owns a really nice traditional Gasthaus and beer garden on the Isar Canal/Hinterbrühler See in Grünwald.

Gasthof Hinterbrühl am See

Prices are good, food is good and the location is very romantic.

This seems like as good a place as any to recommend one of my personal favorites and where I always take visitors to Munich: Dürnbräu, just off Tal between Marienplatz and Isartor (in Dürnbräugasse.)

It's a small place, not many tourists, and they serve half-liter Hellesbier in a glass with a "Deckel" (top with a hinge.) On a nice day, you can celebrate in the small beer garden out front.

Alles Gute!

If you like Italian, I second post #3, La Vecchia Masseria. Maybe 5 minutes' walk from Sendlinger Tor. You will need reservations, even if it's a small group.

I agree, the food there is excellent but it's not exactly cheap (understatement of the year). Also, since the place is always full it gets very noisy, especially if you have the misfortune of being seated close to the bar area.

So I have pretty much decided on Lemar. Hopefully I can still get a booking for next week - I will call at lunch time.

You surely won't regret it, I had a birthday dinner there and the food was delicious.

Off the top of my head I'd recommend Prinz Myshkin (it's vegetarian only though)...

Go to Jade Chinese restaurant for Dim-Sum!

Dreigroschenkeller, it's really a treat. I hope you can reserve in time!
Click on the word "Reservierungen" and a window opens where you can enter your information and request.

It's a bricked basement next to but across the river from the Deutsches Museum, the food is unostentatious - potatoes and Bavarian style meat-patties (Fleischpflanzerln) -, the beer is served in pop-top bottles and your after-dinner Schnaps is paid by centimeter.

Sorry to post another 'where to go for dinner' post but I have read many reviews of restaurants in Munich, and they are categorised either by cuisine or location rather than atmosphere. I'm looking for a restaurant to celebrate my 30th birthday with three friends on a Saturday night. Can anyone please recommend a lively and fun venue, where we can sit comfortably for the evening and enjoy a leisurely meal with lots of drinking and gossiping. One of the party is very pregnant, so nearby parking is essential so we can whisk her away if required! We're pretty flexible on type of food (other than non-pregnancy friendly foods) and can be any part of Munich - it's more important to have a good time. Think cocktails (inc. non-alcoholic!), friendly service, lively atmosphere and good quality food. Any suggestions gratefully received!

The Wirtshaus zur Brezn in Leopoldstrasse offer all you are asking for except maybe the parking but there is a taxi stand close by as well as underground parking at Münchener Freiheit underneath Karstadt. Good drinks including cocktails, gorgeous Bavarian food with healthy options and a good chance of eye candy (being pregnant doesn't mean you can't go window shopping).

The Big Easy is now completely non-smoking, has a varied Canjun-flavoured menu and I like their cocktails (also it being a New Orleans place & having my name, I can only order Hurricanes on principle...). Parking can be problematic, but it is very close to the Frauenklinik zum Roten Kreuz (Taxisgarten) if you need it!

There's no close parking for Olympiaturm though.

There's a parking lot behind the tower, about 5 mins slow walk from the upper deck to the entrance to the tower.

Thank you all for your recommendations! The Olympiaturn is a fab idea, but I'm terrified of heights so perhaps not the most relaxing location - would be a really memorable place to celebrate though so perhaps I'll be brave! The Big Easy also sounds fun... I'll ask the other girls and will post a review of wherever we end up. Thank you again for your suggestions!
