‘Router on a stick’, also called one-armed routing

Not to be confused with fisting.

Why not ask your question anyway and see if the assembled throng can't steer you in the right direction.

Yeha ask the question smile.gif 42 is as good as I can do with no actuall question in the first place i'm afraid.

Not a problem.. But I hope you have the right model router and switch and the correct ver. IOS
(You didn't say what kinda kit you had)..

I could take the next hour to give you step-by-step instructions, or I can just point you to the 2 places that will do it for me,
and give you lots more info. in the process...

1. Google
2. Google Groups
3. Cisco Knowlegebase

Ok

I have a Cisco 2600 router (IOS 12.1(7)) with two ethernet interfaces connected to an old 3Com switch which has no management support and therefore does not support VLANs.

I have two laptops in two separate networks (192.168.100.0/24 and 192.168.50.0/24) plugged into the switch, as well as a DSL router which gives me access to the outside world. The DSL router is in the .100 network with the address 192.168.100.254 for the internal interface. The laptop in the .100 net obviously has no problem reaching the internet.

My problem is I cant configure the router correctly to give the laptop in the .50 net access to the internet. I cant route between the .100 and .50 networks.

So my question is how this is done ?

The router interfaces are configured to use the following IPs

192.168.100.250
192.168.50.250

My laptop in the .50 network can ping both of these addresses but cannot reach the .254 address of the DSL router.

What part of the config am I missing to enable the routing ??!?

Many thanks

this is a very weird config.
i would say change the 192.168.50.250 to the address 192.168.100.251

Heres some steps to help, the site should be able to tell you everything you need to know.

Here

If you would like to by-pass the learning process, and would like me to set it up for you, then please
PM me a copy of your "sh run" and "sh config" comands. Paste the output into a 2 .txt file and attach to the PM.

Can I just check something. Does the fact that my switch does not support VLANs mean that this configuration is not possible anyway ?

Not in the way cisco want/thinks it should work. For this you would need atleast a 2912 series switch...

Go to your PC's and do pings/traceroutes to the IP address of both routers and to other networked devices. Which IP's are are seen, which are not, and between which 2 devices... Unless your switch supports VLAN's there's no real need to separate you NB from the rest of the net, as anybody can plug-in and change their PC's IP address to match whichever lan they want to jump on...

I'd just put both the Desktop and the NB on the same LAN, connect the
DSL modem/router to 1 of the Ethernet ports on the router, configure a default route on the router (point towards the DSL modem) and configure the PC's default route to be the other Ethernet interface on the router. Problem solved.. You could always install a seperat Firewall to restrict traffic further, or setup ACL's on the Cisco.

This is not a productive system it is just so I can mess around and learn a bit about routing. Sure the design makes no sense but I want to be able to configure the router to be able to route traffice between these two networks and I cannot find out how to do it.

I just wonder what part of the config I am missing to allow the .100 net to communicate with the .50 net.

most likly an "Route add" Entry
