I'm off now, I think I have everything. The kitchen sink is still in place.
DDBug
Apparently American ingenuity is at it's best. There are over ten tables being held as I type. smile.gif
Pas
On what charges are they being held?
eurobabs
Ruthie, there will be many people there and many places for people to sit if they dont want to be near Tobi. You should come anyway and just have a nice day!!! Hope you change your mind Ruthie, would be nice to see you smile.gif

I will be along around 5.30, but will only stay for a very short time as I have a major head cold happening at the moment and should really be staying home in bed, but will make it out for at least an hour. Although if it continues as it is now, there may be fireworks when my head explodes wacko.gif

Happy 4th of July everyone! I'm here in San Clemente, and will be enjoying fireworks on the beach tonight . . . Really wish I could join your party though.

Anyway, my husband and his buddies may join you guys later and bring some light fireworks . . . Just look out for two or three bald guys in suits biggrin.gif
DDBug
What a great event! Tables were reserved in "area 2" without problem (ok, Allen only had to scare away a kiddy birthday party, a wedding party and random Germans with picnick baskets), there was tons of food and snacks and cakes and cookies, great people, fireworks (thanks, sparkler girls!) and only just a little bit of off key singing.

Apparently I am the keeper of the lost and found - and if you left behind german flag colored styrofoam cushion thingies, pickled onions and mayonaise - call me. I don't want any of it!

Happy 4th everyone (even though it's technically over here). Thanks for that little bit of home smile.gif
James_Runner
At one point this evening I counted around 120 people! Last year on the 4th of July I was relatively new in town and spent the afternoon in German class. I looked out the window and noticed the rain, recalling that my laundry was hanging outside, and felt far from home. Thanks to everyone for making tonight a fabulous evening, and especially those who came early to claim table space and brought tastes from home!
DDBug
And we didn't shoot until we saw

mountainflyer99
Hey - Great to meet as many people as I could tonight - Hirschgarten is very cool & very BIG, enough to accommodate us, American style!

But, next year more fireworks!!

smile.gif
Heather
oh_angela
Tonight was a great success!! Felt right at home listening to off-key patriotic songs and eating wings, dorritos, baked beans, muffins...etc!!! Looking forward to the next Ami Stammtisch!!!
RS500Guy
Wow! That was a great turnout and party. The Hirschgarten setting was just right for our group's size.

Thanks to everyone who brought something - over 100 people contributed to the success of the event.

Things I learned last night:

- Good cookies have eggs, GREAT cookies have 3 eggs
- People do not need/want/like condiments
- I cannot sing, well
- Munich has a football team that uses a properly shaped ball
- You can have a wedding at a biergarten (and as a bonus, have the wedding reception crashed by drunk Americans asking dumb questions)
- 257 steps is too far for the toilet
- Someone else likes Eminence Front
- Radler sucks, especially when you think it is beer

BTW - Whoever hung the American flag on the far tree I have it now. Just let me know where you want to meet and collect it.
Kat
Agreed. It was great and must be repeated soon.
Special thanks to the person who brought the American-style baked beans - so much better than anything usually over here - and the girl who brought those pies - yum!

Things I learned last night:

- When standing downwind from a deer enclosure, you needn't keep checking your shoes or asking your friend if their cat has been marking their clothes. ph34r.gif
- Cold roast duck is a popular picnic choice and can earn you tickets to a (properly-shaped) football game.
- 1 and a half Maß will make Americans believe that the Star Spangled Banner contains the words 'la-la-la'.
- Not even threats of war will keep Brits away from a good party. laugh.gif
DDBug
Found: 2 cushiony things. Please PM for collection.

I also now have more condiments than I know what to do with - so I'll save them for the END OF SUMMER PARTY!!! (Whenever that may be).

And to everyone I met last night for the first time, I was right, I've forgotten your tt names. ph34r.gif Send me a pm?

Photos are up in the gallery. Drop me a PM if anyone wants anything removed.

Lots of wrinkles?

Cushions are mine, they got lost in the melée. The flag belongs to mudshark, the umbrella possibly as well.

Damn, that was one cool 4th of July away from home! I learned that

- the bride's parents had a 4th of July picnic in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, and were almost lynched for putting the Stars & Stripes on the ground
- there is a new species of tree somewhere in the US, an arbor bobbitensis
- if you can't cook you bring potato chips to a picnic

Thank you all for coming, and thank you to the Germans who smiled at our celebration and promised not to let it rain. Biggest thank you to James_Runner for having the idea in the first place.
Pas
The pics I took are quite frankly shockingly poor but here's a short video

Short Video

Kat, you're getting far too much pleasure in that Pic bern took.
Kat
@Pas - You're right. I must cut back on the Brit-beatings. I wouldn't want to make a habit of it. The element of surprise would be ruined. wink.gif I see as revenge, you only videoed the top of my short head. laugh.gif
TexMunich
Great Video.

4th of July in a Beergarten, I wonder if we can get this idea exported to America.

Does anybody know who that hot chick in the white sweater is crossing the video near the end? She's hot biggrin.gif

Thank you, siskebap, I'll forward the link to my Ma. I like the ones with the sunlight striking off the Maßkrüge.
EDIT: And TexasLauren's melons.

Hi, everyone. How about having the next Stammtisch on Friday, July 25? If the date is good, suggestions for the location are welcome. Another Biergarten? It doesn't have to be another full-blown potluck, as the the bash on the 4th became. We could just meet in a Biergarten, as we did in early May. smile.gif
jen13
First I would like to say THANK YOU TO JAMES and EVERYONE else that organized the event last Friday. I was a HUGE success and it would have never happened without someone taking charge and planning the event. Thank you so much for bringing all of us together. I had a great time!

Second, the 25 July works for me. what about a more central Biergarten
, ie the Augustiner Biergarten (behind the Hackerbrucke Haltestelle) http://www.augustinerkeller.de/

Yes you were, congratulations! wink.gif

Oh I'm so sad I missed it! I had to go to Regensburg last minute to see some Colorado friends before they go back home. Let's do another one!!
aef
I love the Augustiner. Sounds like a great plan
Kat
The Augustiner Biergarten (behind the Hackerbrucke Haltestelle) http://www.augustinerkeller.de/ is a very good choice. It's central and easy to get to, and it even has large rooms inside where we can probably move if the weather doesn't cooperate.
oh_angela
Date and place sound great to me. I'm game!
DandL
Hey, that is the night of the third annual Ex-Pats in Silver Hats...could we make it in conjunction with that? It is being held at Hofbraukeller. It looks like a blast!

I'm with jen13, aef, Kat and oh_angela and think the Augustiner Biergarten sounds like a super idea! smile.gif Shall we go with this? I have not yet been there. Does anybody know if we can make a reservation, or if we must come early to claim table space?

Directions: For those (like me) who are directionally challenged and lost without Google Map, the address is: Arnulfstrasse 52, 80335 München. Here's a link to the Web site in English, which has links to a map and to routing for those traveling by train or car. The Augustiner Biergarten lies along the central S-Bahn line between the Hackerbrücke and Hauptbahnhof stops and is a lot closer to the former (perhaps 3 minutes on foot). According to their Web site (whose English version I clarify a bit), these are the best options for public transportation:

QUOTE
• S-Bahn to Hackerbrücke (1 stop west of Hauptbahnhof; the only street at the Hackerbrücke stop is Grasserstraße. Walk along Grasserstraße in the direction of Arnulfstrasse, which is the first street you'll meet. Turn right on Arnulfstrasse, and within a minute or two you'll see the Biergarten.)
• U1/U2 or U4/U5 to Hauptbahnhof (and then about 7 minutes by foot to Augustinerkeller)
• Tram 16 towards Romanplatz to the stops Hopfenstrasse or Hackerbrücke
• Tram 17 towards Amalienburgstr. to the stops Hopfenstrasse or Hackerbrücke

For those traveling by car, the Web site states, "There are enough parking sites in front of our house or close-by."
jen13
Yippee! Looking forward to another good time cool.gif

Maybe next time.

Due to a technical glitch, this thread spent a couple days in purgatory limbo but is now back. Looking forward to the Augustiner Biergarten a week from Friday. smile.gif
