Seriously, this is going to be a major event, and hirshgarten is the biggest beergarten. Has anyone got a vague idea what part of the garden people should start trying to save tables in? I'm having cut and paste problems with google maps, but basically there is the area to the right when you come in - more trees, a bit shadier, nearer the deer, and round "back" of the self-service hut. Or the area to the left in "front" of, but just beyond, the self-service huts, the tables are a bit more crowded together, less shade but it borders the park with possibly room to spread out blankets and let kids run free.

Smashing idea! However, if doing so will create a sense of alienation and discord (to quote Tony Blair) then a wall between the worlds, we must build (to quote Yoda).

Plus, people always bring more food than they can eat anyway. There will be plenty to go around.

Ok, finally got over the blonde moment.
I vote for area "2" - though I've personally only ever sat in area "1". What does everyone else think?

This is looking pretty good! Can someone take over condiments: mustard, ketchup, mayonnaise, relish, pickles, pickled onions etc. And is someone really, really good at making coleslaw (with or without carrots)?

I took the day off from work so I can get there early. I will just need help with a few menacing German phrases to keep the unwashed masses away from our tables until reinforcements arrive.

We're bringing some spare ribs (did I already add this? This thread is out of control - a signup sheet would be sooo much easier) and pasta salad - probably tuna with mayo just for traditional risk-taking sake, most likely a soccer ball or two (does anyone have a real american football? my kids need to play that at least once before they hit puberty) probably some bread as well.

That's probably a good idea!

I just had a brainwave (tomato/mozzarella/basil salad is brain food): Whoever reserves the tables, and I'll try to be among them, should bring along tape and a roll of colored paper wide enough for tablecloths. Tape the paper to the tables and everyone will know that they are occupied.

I'll pick some up from Kaufhof today or tomorrow.
