Why do people make a post saying "
I've sent you a PM"?
See here for loads and loads of examples.
When I refresh a TT page my eye automatically glances at the "
... new messages" message. Other people have the pop-up alert when they get a message. I'd be surprised if there could be a situation when logging on or changing pages that one wouldn't notice if they had received something. So why do you tell someone that you've PM'd them?

I find it useful when something is for sale, as it shows that other interested parties have already PM'ed. If I am desperate for the article, then of course I'll PM the owner as well to check if it's still free, but usually I won't bother as I assume that it's already gone.
Plus, some of those ppl selling/giving things away say that they aren't on TT much, so I assume that they get the e-mail notification when someone replies to their thread.

Seriously, I think people do it to let the person know that their thread is actually being read. You feel like a Dork when you start a thread and NOBODY replies!

A bit different. It'd be the person doing the ringing who shouts it.
Ding-dong. Next thing a pair of eyes appear through the letter box and a voice shouting "
I rang your bell!"
Can you beat this?

Which an absolute nightmare since I've setup my email system to send me a PM when I receive something. It's been looping for weeks now!
Incidentally, to ALL of you who just sent me PMs, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you. My PM box was looking a little light recently and I'm now tipping into the 81% full zone. Cheers for that. I shall respond to you all individually and with all the appreciation you deserve and as much bile as I can siphon from the rancid core of my being.

I also love it when somebody states "please do not post in this thread but send me a PM if you are interested". That almost guarantees that the thread will fill up rapidly with random fuckwits asking questions and saying they have sent a PM...

Once only have I posted to a newbie that I had sent him a PM. He'd asked for general information on a for-sale thread, and I didn't want it to look as if I'd totally ignored him, nor did I want anyone posting the info on that thread, nor again did I want to tell him off for being stupid inexperienced as to forum ways and rules. Otherwise it is a bit of overkill.

it is pretty silly, although having said that, theres a few times where I have missed seeing a PM if 2 or more come almost simulataneously (obviously that requires being an extremely popular person so perhaps its only me that has experienced it

)

You're not wrong. The problem is that that counter is reset to zero when you click on your inbox whether you read all new messages or not. So I can have loads of unread PMs but at the top right it still says "0 New Messages".
Nevertheless I still can't see myself ever posting "I've sent a PM".

Before we got together, my boyfriend used that as an excuse not to go out on a date with me. He
says he didn't see the PM but to this day I don't believe him.

Thank his lucky stars that I'm both stubborn and persistant.

Here's an example of it being a silly thing to do. By making his "
I've sent you a PM" post the user has brought the ad back to the top of the list and thus more people are going to see it. It's like saying, I want to buy your product but first I'll help advertise it for you in case anyone would like to make a higher bid.

I've had several occasions where someone has pm'd me to just randomly post something to a thread to keep it current.

exactly, Keydeck. I hadn't seen that advert before he posted. Having seen it, I immediately put in an offer on the phone. I hope i get it, just to prove how idiotic it is to make such posts.

Why the hell do folk feel the need to tell everyone that they have sent someone a PM.
I am sure when they open TT and log-in... they will find out you sent one.

How do you work that one out. You sent her a PM with the answers, which she will get the next time she logs in. Doesn't sound like ignoring at all
To anyone reading the thread it does because her questions are there, addressed to him by (user)name.

I noticed in the adverts-section, there are a lot of people who post "PM'ed you", or "I just sent you a PM" or anything like that. Why?? When someone is PM'ed, it is a hell of a lot clearer by a popup that they received a message than going back into the thread and see if someone posted that they sent a message...

Well just to answer the old question. You can disable the pop up option so when you recieve a PM it only shows in the top right hand corner. The bad thing about this is that unless you are use to checking your message board everyday you might not realize you have a PM. I actually use to miss PMs for three or four days becaause of this. So I went back to the pop up.
Also sometimes I am not sure if I sent a pm because I deactivated the save sent pm option so instead of smothering with them with pms I will say "sent you a pm". Which I guess is the samething.
Anyway sent you a pm to explain this.
Owain Glyndwr
