I want to check the existence of a company in Germany. In the UK I usually use the online search facility of Companies House, but I have no idea where to start looking here...
Anyone know?

The Handelsregister only confirms company name, and that it is still trading - maybe this is all you need?. For detailed information you need to search the Amstgericht records for the state where the company is registered, for which there is a charge (usually €8-10, depending on the state). Some credit agencies can also provide information, again for a fee, but are not to be trusted because the glean information from the Handelsregister, and supplement it with information provided voluntarilly be the companies themselves... There is little or no checking for accuracy. Most banks will also do a credit check on public companies.

Found out about these guys through my last job-
Bürgel Wirtschaftsinformationen (in English) - they are pretty close to Companies House.
