My co-worker and I have been discussing how to translate "red-lined" using something just as snappy and graphic in German and never got any further than "Vergleichsversion". You can't really use just plain "gerötelt" as that is a special art technique. I rather like "durchgerötet" but don't think it is generally understood.

What does it mean in English?
And there's me thinking that it's a well-known phrase generally used in offices for a document version comparing an altered document with the original document using colors, strike-through and underlining. Shows you never stop learning.

I call it a "document diff" cos I am a programmer and that is what we call it when we compare text files. Noone ever seems to know what I mean though

Just asked around the office and according to various junior and very senior people, there isn't a german phrase or word for 'red lined' version.
They suggest 'marked up version' as being the global phrase.
There isn't one for 'black lined' either.

is a bin-lined one a draft you 've chucked away?
I've never heard the term "red-lined" used in that context. People I work with/for usually say "marked-up version" or simply "mark-up",
even those who used to say "black-lined" a few years ago.

"Kopie mit Verbeserungsvoschläge"???
"red-lined" / "marked-up" document is a common phrase - come on techies, catch-up to the rest of the world!
it is also commonly known as an "editor's mark-up" or "corrections that the boss insists you make".
Real techies don't do documents ! The guy who left work last week was responsible for the docs.

Customers have always refered to the things as Vergleichsdateien or a Datei mit Änderungsbalken (for FrameMaker files cos that's the menu item used to mark the changes) or simply Datei mit Änderungsmarkierungen/vorschläge (for any other variety of file).
