Thanks

Take the S-Bahn to Herrsching am Ammersee, and walk from there. It's not too far. I don't remember how far exactly, but shouldn't be much more than an hour of walking; pleasant stroll if the weather is nice.
There are some bus connections, but they seem to be few and far between, so if you rely on the bus, you might get stuck out in Andechs.

The route to the monestary is signposted from the station. When you get to a T-junction with signs to Andechs in both directions, turn left for the shorter walk. Both routes are very pleasant though. When you get to Andechs, check the bus times at the bus stop if you don't want to walk back. The last bus is at 1738 (Saturdays) or 1838 (Sundays).
Type in '951' into the
MVV timetable for bus times, but there are other buses operated privately.

Was thinking of hiking up there tomorrow with my parents. Would it even be open on the holiday?

Yes. They were open the day the Pope died.

There is a bus which goes from the new
Starnberg Bus Bahnhof ( the one before the main station ), it takes a little longer but for visitors to see the countryside it's fine. Also it's free as the
S Bahn ticket covers the bus, unlike the bus from Herrsching a lot of them are private and you mostly have to buy two single tickets, one up and one back again ( about €2,50 each )

No-one knows the times of the bus from the station up to
Andechs do they (for a weekday)? My poor German can't work out the
MVV timetable.

Every 20 min, if I remember correctly. They try to time it to leave 5 min. or so after each
S-Bahn Arrives.

Finally managed to find an online timetable for the private buses that run between Herrsching and
Andechs. Makes a nice trip in the winter as well!
Go to
ammersee-reisen.de and select 'Regionale Busfahrpläne' from the menu.

Andechs is a great place. When we lived in Herrsching we were up there at least once a week, usually on foot via the Kiental. Then for many years we would walk from Wessling. Now we take the
S5 to Herrsching and either walk up or use the bus, see timetable above. Walking down can be dodgy, particularly after too much beer, or when icey. 12 people have died ,and thats just the ones they know about!!!
Andechs is closed on christmas and new years eve. It also closes down for a while in January, so check before going all the way there.

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but if you are organizing a big group to
Andechs, you should know that the s-bahn only goes to Gaemering now where you have to catch a bus to Herrsching. Takes much longer. They are doing repairs on the tracks.
I checked the
MVV website and it says nothing of the SEK anymore. Can anyone confirm that the SBahn is running normally at the weekend now? Of course I can check with MVV later too, was just wondering..

Thanks!

The SEV on the S5 between Germering-Unterpfaffenhofen and Herrsching is set to continue (During the Weekend) until the end of May.
The S-Bahn is run by Deutsche Bahn, Not the
MVV. Have a look at the
S-Bahn web site instead. -

Was there a couple of weeks ago, its not that bad, after coming off the S-Bahn had 3 or 4 coaches waiting, just jump on and off they head to Herrshing. Back is more of a dazy after a few Andecher Bock's !

I was just looking at heading out there tomorrow, but for some reason the
MVV Fahrplan has a change at
Pasing to the S5 and only at certain times, I checked the S-Bahn site but couldn't see anything specifically listed about 24.06 - does anyone know or have any insight as to what is happening with the S5 from
HBF to Herrsching? We are going to walk up and down to the monastery so the bus is not an issue.

@ Blimeygirl
Just heard on the radio that there is work going on on the the "Stammstrecke" Pasing/Laim and that the S-Bahns which run through there are running to a special timetable (could be delays as only one track is in operation). More than that I don't know but it's a start!

Its not 60 from Herrsching, surely?

Yes, a scouting trip ahead of the North South meetup is necessary and I will be in town this weekend to ensure that the airport is in the same place, beer still flows out of taps and biergartens are still there, etc.

Supposed to be a nice walk anyway, isn't it?

Can you book a table for
Andechs and is it adviseable for a Saturday in July when the weather is supposed to be good?
sarabyrd

No need for that, plenty of room for all. If the weather is really good the Biergarten is a better bet, get your food from the stands and crash out under the chestnut trees.

You can reserve tables inside and this is advisable at weekends when the weather is too cold to sit outside.

Agreed! We take all guests there staying longer than a couple days. Always a hit.
The walk is not difficult (although you can work up a sweat, even in winter), and takes us usually about 45 min. It's beautiful, and you can always take the bus back to the S-bahn station if you dont want to make the trek both ways.

The monks at
Andechs look like convicts to me and I always wondered were all the pigs are kept for the scwheinbraten, I reckon they use em for disposing of bodies or sumink, good beer though.

Are there walking directions (or a map showing the two different routes) available online or anywhere else?

The routes are signposted from Herrsching station. The only topographical map online is the
Bayern Viewer, although
Stadtplandienst also marks the paths.
Andechs is SSE of Herrsching.

Thanks, I'll check out those links!
I've only been to
Andechs once, and we didn't find the path especially well-marked, especially in Herrsching itself. We mistakenly ended up on the longer path, which was a tough hike (through the mud) for some in the group. I don't want to make that mistake again when I take some older family members there next month. We definitely want to do the walk in at least one direction, though, rather than the bus both ways.
IIRC, we came out of the Bahnhof and went right and then after a block or two came to a T in the street; we went right towards the lake, but perhaps this is where we should have gone left for the shorter walk?

When you get to that part of the road (Near the church) there are 2 signs for
Andechs.
1 says Andechs (To the Left), The other (Right) says Andechs via ???.
Unless you want to walk the long way, go LEFT!!!
Small Town Boy
May 7 2008, 10:02 am
The shorter route follows the valley, and at the end climbs up to the monastery. The longer route is only a little longer, but involves more climbing. It follows the hill on the west side of the valley. You then have to drop down into the valley that the shorter path takes and then head up the hill that the monastery is on.
There is a junction where you choose between the long and the short route, and as DK says you turn left for the shorter walk. But this is on the far side of Herrsching and well away from the lake. Are you sure you did actually take the longer route? The short route follows a track through the woods. The long route includes a long stretch through a meadow, high up above the valley, with views of the monastery through the trees.
Look on the
map for the small street called "Andechsstr." You want to get yourself onto that street. At the end of that street is where you will see the two signs – "
Andechs über Kiental" (easier route) and "Andechs über Klosterleite/Hörndlweg" (harder route). There is also a map at Herrsching station.

Thanks. Maybe we just weren't paying enough attention last time, but we didn't see many signs and definitely missed the point where two marked choices, right vs. left, were presented. If this church you mention is in Herrsching and not far from the Bahnhof, then I think I know where we went wrong, er, right.

We'll definitely go left there next time!
EDIT: We definitely took the long route, as I remember the uphill climb and the meadow . . . and the couple we surprised there.

Here's the route we normally follow. It's 4.5km.
Small Town Boy
May 7 2008, 10:10 am
That's the harder one. It's longer because you have to double-back on yourself and harder because there's an extra hill to climb. But you get views of both the lake and the monastery. I like to walk to the monastery on that path and go back on the easier one, which is then downhill all the way.

I normally take a taxi back to the station cuz I's lazy like that. Last time we took a taxi from
Andechs to Günther Murphy's (RIP). €60 door to door.

That would be a third way to go. We did that first time we went and ended up walking beside the road half the way and then cutting up through the trees towards the longer walk just outside town. Not the optimum way to walk.

It looks like I'll be swinging through Muenchen the first weekend in July. Anyone interested in an
