House parties - warning your German neighbors

How to write a party warning note

I was asked by Butterbean about what to write in a note to her neighbor's regarding the Farewell party we are having for Presh tonight and I realized the topic of what to write in a note to your neighbors when having a party has not come up. And this seems like a topic that needs to be addressed, since we know how much Toytowners like to throw parties!

I asked one of my work colleagues for assistance to make sure that I would give Butterbean good advice and this is the note that we came up with:

Heute feieren wir den Abschied von meiner Freundin aus Deutschland, zu dem wir auch Sie herzlich einladen möchten.

Die Feier könnte etwas lauter werden. Im Voraus möchten wir uns deshalb für eventuelle Unannehmlichkeiten entschuldigen. Wir bitten um Ihr Verständnis. Die Feier endet vermutlich gegen 23 Uhr.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen,
Frau/Herr (insert your name) 3. Stock

Translation of above (very direct translation):
This evening we are celebrating the departure of my friend from Germany, to this we also heartfully would like to invite you.

The party could get a little loud. In advance we would like to therefore apologize for any inconvenience (annoyance). We ask for your understanding. The party will end most likely around 11pm.

With friendly greetings,
Ms./Mr. (insert name) (3rd floor)

Now, this is obviously specific to this evening's event. But if you were having a birthday party, then you would just change the first part to "Heute feiere ich meinen Geburtstag...(instead of "Heute feieren wir den Abschied von meiner Freundin aus Deutschland").

As you will notice, we included the opportunity for the neighbors to come. You could also leave this part out. But it seems like strategically a good idea, because if the neighbors do come, then they will 1. become your friends and not your enemy in the future 2. won't complain about the noise that night. The chance of them actually coming if you don't know them is probably very low though.

I just wrote in 3. Stock (3rd floor) so that people know where to find you. But this was just an example. So you can change it to 2. or 4. or so on depending on what floor you live on.

Obviously the time that the party is ending is also an example.

The best place to hang this up will be by where people get their mail in the entrance of the building. Sometimes there is a board that has announcements from the Hausmeister (landlord) such as about when the trash will be collected or something. You can put it on that board. It there is no board, then just tape it up.

Another possibility is to hang it on the doors of the entrance to your floor (if your building is set up that way) and the ones above and below your floor.

Ok, have a good time celebrating! rolleyes.gif

that is pretty much what i put up when we have had partys, the inviting them bit is very important i think... even if you get one other neighbour in for one glass of wine you have an ally!

we put it up a couple of days before because i though a bit more than a days notice might be nice, so they can organise to go out for the night or send the kids to oma's...

I wouldn't put a finishing time just in case it goes on later.

Can someone please tell me how to tell my neighbours - actually I seem to have good neighbours - so how to tell the strangers from the building next door:

"if you ever leave the macarena running on auto replay I will definitely call the polizei, the gez, my mother, and whatever other scary official organizations I can think of to shut you down". Alternatively "you bastards turn off your crap music before you leave the house" will also suffice.

Oh the horrors. I can't get it out of my head, "hey macarena"...make it stop, make it stop.
