Hi All,

Anyone know of any shelters where they need volunteers? Have a bunch of free food and powdered coffee that I'd like to donate, as well as some time.

Would be grateful for any info.

Thanks.

Hmm, first thing that popped to mind was the Bahnhofshilfe. Can't find any contact numbers for them online, but they are located at the Hauptbahnhof, when looking at the tracks, over on the left hand wall by the tracks there.

If your German is up to it, you could try calling the Soziale Stiftung Tel. 089 / 233 - 25646 / 22644 and seeing what they suggest.

Please post what you find Twinsie; I'm missing some good hearted activism as well...

Yeah please do...I've got some free time and a collection of hotel soaps that need a home. The shelters in the states are always in need of em but when I asked around people here thought I was off my rocker.

The only thing I've come across so far is a prison program. I saw adverts in the US consulate for a buddy program for local prisoners. They ask for English books, pen pals and visitors for (mostly) the english speaking prisoners as well as a few wanting to learn english.

Wow, thanks you guys! I will definitely be posting what I find. Maybe even organize a group of us to go and help out or something. My German is up to it so I will give the Sozial Stiftung a call, thanks showem.

Don't know if they need volunteers as well

Some friends of friends do collections of old English language books and magazines for prisoners - a VERY good idea.

But from asking around, it seems you should be careful about prison visiting. Some prisoners are glad of casual visits but for some prisoners it becomes a very important part of their life so it is soething you should be prepared to do reguarly and have some commitment to.

If you plan on having a quiet couple of hours curled up with a bottle of Vino Collapso on the sofa this Xmas, get yourself something to read, buy a copy of BISS.
