At the begining of the thread some people were asking some questions about BMW.
They do claim to be an international company, however when you get inside, you will realize that the mentality is still very Baverian, let alone international. When they merged with Rover some time ago (miserably), they were supposed to become international. It simply did not happen. If you enter the company through official channels (like the online recruitment website) you will need to speak fluent german as the first two rounds of interviews are conducted in German.
If you enter through a less official channel, such as doing a praktium, often you can land a permant job providing your skill is "in demand". Thats what I did. I am lucky in a sense that not many other people can do my job, and my immediate bosses tend to respect that enough to force the by-the-book personel department to turn a blind eye to my shit german skills. For my job all coleagues (except for one or two true jolly old Baverians) speak english with me - so I get by OK.
This is not to say anyone wanting to land a job with BM should not try to speak german. Meetings are always slower when done in Engish, so I feel like a burdon sometimes - although everyone says they enjoy the chance to practice english with me. And lunchtime...it get so frustrating when there is a funny joke and I dont understand.

Hello folks
I'm currently pursuing Bachelor of Business Admin at some university in Canada.
I've no knowledge in German whatsoever.
In terms of internships, praktikum, or whatever it's called, am I basically out of luck?
That is, without any knowledge in German, is it impossible to get student internships?
I will be finishing my second year at the end of April and am willing to move to Germany for app. 4 months, doing internship + attending a language school
i don't even care if they weren't to pay me, as long as it can count towards my co-op work term (part of my university undergrad business program requires me to complete three 4mth interships before i graduate)
if internship is impossible, i'd like to just move there this summer for some intensive german language lessons. Would everyone here recommend Munich is the place? for studying the language.. I know there are certain accents in certain regions but I've no idea where to go

QUOTE (gururise @ Mar 20 2005, 8:43 am)
What is the best way to apply for a job in Germany? I currently reside in the USA, and would like to move to Germany and find work there. Do you find that companies are willing to pay for you to relocate from the USA, or does one need to already be in Germany with a valid residence permit before a company will even consider hiring you?
as an american, you have a right to come to germany on a tourist visa with the intention of looking for a job. now, obviously this isn't something you should flaunt and be arrogant about, but i actually read this and got a confirmation from the visa office when i came here to do just that. although i had done an internship here and so wanted to stay on a tourist visa to look for work.
p.s. BL -- thank you for all that information!

Does anyone have any good contacts at Tyco. My husband is looking for a job and he is "Elektrotechniker". He got his degree in 1992 in Croatia. He doesn´t have much of experience but he would like to start working in his field. Any tips and he also needs his working permit done (he does have one, but only for his current employer)
Thanks

A lot of people get jobs through their network - so it's worth signing up for online networking groups such as OpenBC and LinkedIn.
Especially when you are applying to the big firms, you will find that many of the jobs are already taken. Some companies have a hiring policy that they will look for internal candidates first, and others have a rule that jobs must be advertised externally, but that doesn't mean the job is actually open. You can burn a lot of time - and get seriously demotivated - by simply applying reactively.
Instead, get proactive. I've had more jobs through word-of-mouth and networking than any other route - and I get most of my new business through referrals.
A special word for online networking sceptics: I also had serious hang-ups before I took the plunge. Like me you'll probably be surprised at who you know is already using these. You can control how much (or little) personal info you release to trusted contacts, plus anyone else surfing around.

so is it possible to work there (at Kraft) without being fluent in german? I'd say my german is intermediate...can understand most things, read most things, but just have a hard time speaking it without alcohol to loosen me up

All depends what branch you work in...most IT & Comms companies welcome English speakers, yet most of the other branches would be pretty tough!

Hello!
I work for Deloitte & Touche (Deloitte Consulting), they won't hire you right now without German...
Since we merged with Deloitte & Touche auditors, they have gone back to being more regional.
So your work tends to be within Germany. Having English is a definite asset.
My problem is that I do not write German properly...this seems to be accepted by all ...but I speak and can be in fully German meetings.
Sorry!

I tried to find out which english speaking (internationally operating) companies there are in Munich.
I am currently looking for another job and was wondering how many international companies there are in Munich. Of course there are the big international companies like Siemens, E&Y, EPO, O2 etc. But I also know that there are a lot of smaller or more unknown companies who operate internationally but you have rarely heard of. Maybe you can help me out and name me some companies (ideally with a link to their Munich branches). It is also very interesting to see how international Munich actually is on a business level.

Hi there,
Was wondering if anyone would know where I could find a list of companies based in Munich that use English internaly? Or if you know a few just post them?
Thanks much!

That list is in the same drawer as the list of all the companies in Manila which use German internally.
Since you didn't even specify a general industry it appears that rather than trying to find work, you want to market something to English-speaking companies and expect the people here to do all your legwork for you. Rotsa ruck.
woof.

regardless of the reason behind your question, you should be carefull that there is sometimes a difference between companies that *say* that they use English internally, and thost that *actually use* English as their operating language... and there can be stark variations across departments, too. (i.e. Sales staff = English; internal finance = German).

Are there any large companies in Munich where the main communication language is English? I'd like to move to Munich, but although I've been trying to find something, most of the large companies I've looked at such as Google and Audi want German speakers and I don't speak German! Any suggestions?!
Topics merged by admin
Many companies seem to have English as , at least, the second language.
Look for large American companies as the most likely. It will also depend a lot on your area of expertise.

Hello
I am moving to Munich in January, after I finish up my bachelors in university in Canada. I study Agricultural Business and want to know of Agri companies that I can apply to... any job in that industry really will do, I just want experience in the AgriBusiness field. My German is intermediate level, therefore I wouldnt be able to do a job entirely in German. Any suggestions then of Agri companies that accept english graduates? This forum lists so many international companies.. but none in my field!
(this message is also posted under the new topic "Agricultural Companies in Munich")
Thanks so much for your help

Sorry Red Rose, but most prospective employers, looking at your written english, would not hire you. I guess one of their first thoughts would be, "she doesn't even know how to use Spell Check". You may have many talents to offer but an employer would be looking at several C.V.'s from a pile and if yours is written like your TT post, ... then it doesn't look good.
