What does the community think of Düsseldorf being the sixth best town in the world for life quality?

It has been placed above all other German towns. London is in 39th position and Baghdad comes last.

I wouldn't even put it in the German top 10.

What does "quality of life" mean? I see this often in news articles, and there is never an accompanying definition for it. It often seems conflated with "cost of living" which is something very different than "quality" in my opinion!

It would help if they gave some formula, like <safety+affordable housing+accessible childcare+good cultural possibilities=quality of life>.

In a related vein, it is interesting how comparisons are made of the rental prices in cities, without noting that an apartment here has no kitchen (or sometimes any fixtures, floors, etc!) so the comparable price would be very different than an American city!

Quality of life is a very personal concept.

It makes a BIG difference whether you're looking for a place to raise kids, or to go clubbing, or to get your career going, or to...

Big cities tend to offer more options than smaller places, so maybe quality of life is that you can do all of the above and then some.

I don't think these rankings make sense, honestly. Some cities you visit and think: Wow, I'd love to live here. Others you just don't feel comfortable in. Or they are okay for a week but still you wouldn't want to settle there.

IMO a lot of it comes down to people you know or your social network. A bunch of good friends can make all the difference that clubs, pubs, museums, kindergartens, and parks cannot.

Try Muelheim an der Ruhr. Population just above 160,000. "Die sympathische Stadt an der Ruhr".
