Image files: hotlinked versus uploaded

Please note that we encourage users to upload images in posts, rather than linking them from another site.

The reasons for this are threefold:

1. If an image is on another site, and the site becomes unavailable or the image is moved, the image will no longer be visible.

2. Linking to an image on another site is effectively stealing the other site's bandwidth. This is commonly known as Bandwidth Theft.

3. A malicious site owner might change the image to something completely different to what you expect.

For an example of the 3rd reason, have a look at this item on eBay (NSFW). That seller might want to consider using an image that isn't hotlinked from The Britboard.

@Ed. Bill: tut, tut Should have also mentioned that it's not a very nice image either

@ Ed Bill - sometimes the problem is that the Britboard doesn't always accept the images. So I have had to resort to trustworthy host websites on occasion (thanks Bully).

I just hate to think what he was looking for when he found that!

It won't if the image is too large. Try resizing the image before uploading. Optimal size is 450 pixels wide, then it won't get thumbnailed by the software.

I could never work out how to add images, so I'm going to have another try here. Should be a chick with big knockers.
