Maybe not on par with the previous cd´s but good in any serious collection would be Warren Zevon - Excitable Boy
This is from the 70´s but includes the classic "Werewolves of London"...and "Roland the Headless Tomson gunner" as well as "Lawyers guns and money"

elliot smith: i started with figure 8, but anything by him is tops.
jeff buckley: last goodbye is one of my favourate songs ever but i wouldn't desert island the album.
teenage fanclub: love songs from northern britain - great sunny day stuff.
so, er...
recent: delays, "faded seaside glamour"
old-ish: the sundays, "static and silence"
bit noisier: oasis, "definitely maybe" - you may have forgotten how good oasis actually used to be.

Did Elliot Smith do a song for Good Will Hunting? I know I've seen the movie, but for some reason I don't remember that. He did do a fabulous version of "Because" that runs during the credits of American Beauty. I can't speak for the others, but I've like him much longer than these movies have been around...

http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000...2127851-6258151Needle in the hay isn't listed there, but I've a vague recollection that it gets played at one point and it's pure goosebumps.

Elliott Smith is amazing, if there was a big bloke called God that's the music he'd hum while he did the house work.
I've never seen Good Will, but im sure it's Needle In The Hay that's played in it.

Are you being sarcastic about my comment? He did put out a couple albums before those movies came out.

ELLIOT SMITH IS OK™
I even have a couple of albums by him, but the last word he aint. I would rate David Gray much much higher, for example.
To take this whole thing away from ES, my recommendation for this week is:
La Revancha Del Tango by Gotan Project
French Accordion and Tango with house and deep house beats. Alongs the lines of St Germain. Niiiiiiice
Never heard of Eliott Smith, surfing it up now.. But I did find that:

"Miss Misery," recorded for Gus Van Sant's "Good Will Hunting," was nominated for an Oscar in 1998.
So Miss Misery might be the song you were thinking of.
Also from
this CNN article about him, he doesnt sound like a very good role model. What sort of music does he do anyway?

Elliot Smith is neo Simon & garfunkle as far as I am concerned. The guy offed himself a few months ago by falling on a knife. When you listen to his music, you can pretty much see it coming e.g. "I'll fake it through the day with some help from Johnny Walker Red."

Wow, TT will be the top link for Elliot Smith in Google soon, I think

Have to check out the Gotan Project deal, sounds swell. I'm really enjoying
Daniele Luppi and will push that album a second time. Can't you picture yourself sashaying down
Kaufingerstr. with your
iPod and snapping your fingers to
this? Or strolling past the naked flesh on the banks of the mighty river
Isar, whistling along with
this? Fantastic stuff!

Ever heard of Gran Torino? They're a funk band out of Knoxville that I got into when I lived in Nashville (95-99).

Sounds familiar, but I was living in Germantown 93-97 before moving here. The only local guy that was any good was Tall Paul and he was a one man Dead/Dylan show. Everything else then was line dancing country.

It is very ok. David Gray is a genius. If god was singing a ditty while taking an amazingly satisfying shite, he would sound like David Gray.

Good man Ken, I am a lover of great Theme tunes. Monkey is AWESOME. Really good.
Today, I have been mostly listening to "Tenacious D". I really do not know what to say about a band with a song called "I'm the only gay eskimo" but I have not laughed as much in a while. Superb.

if you'll try anything, how 'bout a little unconventional jazz?
Give Jan Garbarek a shot (unless you hate tenor sax).
The old Tears for Fears LP, what's it called, Songs From The Armchair or something, a great fave or mine.
Chaka Khan's great when you want a bit of a bop.
(see? One reply where "Elliot Smith" hasn't been mentioned - oh damn, just done it)
Talking about jazz, I just discovered Herbie Hancock in my mp3 collection, have about 6 albums here, not bad stuff at all. Most of its fairly traditional jazz, which is ok, but 2 albums that stand out for me are
Headhunters and
Man-Child for being rather more experimental, more far-out and more funky in my opinion than the more traditional stuff.

Check out "Above" by Mad Season.
Anything by Coldplay gets my vote, but if you want to hear something different all day long go to

They play the best eclectic mix I've ever found on a radio station. You can record mp3s right off the web from the radio broadcast (and it's legal!)
